From my experience, the quality varies considerably, and the best experience I've had was using a high quality high resolution pinhole camera and personally incorporating it inside an appliance.
The stuff you get in amazon already pre-made tends to go cheap on the camera, since it's the most expensive component of the whole puzzle. It's the core of the experience. You need something with a good lens and good resolution, and usually that means some work and money.
For your average amateur voyeurism, it should be fine, but don't expect focused high def titties from your zomg1080phd wall charger. There are many components to consider, not the least of which is visibility.
