VPN's aren't useful for "encrypting your traffic." VPN's do encrypt traffic, but only between clients in the same VPN. Your net traffic to hosts outside the VPN will be as unencrypted as always, not to mention if you're on the level of shaking G-men then performing the handshake in the same jurisdiction (so the same subpoena can get the same information) is nonsense.
VPN's do fuckall for anonymity like that. They don't secure your information, and instead of leading back to you they lead back to your host, who sure as shit isn't gonna take the fall for you and hide your address information in spite of court orders.
What VPN's ARE good for, and what they're most often used for, is rerouting traffic. You can effectively shift your access point to the internet around to give yourself a different country of origin. If you take a VPN in the Netherlands for instance, you benefit from different laws that state authorities can't force people to comply with decrypting info, and that would require international litigation in order to get to you which means a massive amount of time and money is stacked on top of the cost of pursuing you.
Aside from that the activity you're doing may be legal or at least condoned. If you are in Germany and you torrent copyrighted media, you WILL be traced, your ISP will have a standing arrangement with the media corps and you will get a punitive fine in the mail in the order of several grand.
