"they say that life's a carousel, spinning fast, you've got to ride it well,
The world is full of kings and queens that blind your eyes and steal your dreams, it's heaven and hell.

And they'll tell you black is really white, the moon is just the sun at night,
And when you walk in golden halls, you get to keep the gold that falls, it's heaven and hell."

That speech the Turks gave in Final Fantasy VII that ended with "...because it's our job."
Actually it was a bunch of quotes and the way they weren't priding themselves on any lofty ideals or personal wealth like most people do. The idea of taking such pride in doing your job changed the way I looked at work (commercial electrician btw). Instead of just trying to do 8 hours without fucking up, I started trying to do a better job than the people around me, just for the personal satisfaction of knowing that I did my job well. It didn't take long for my newfound perfectionism to be noticed, and so I never had to worry about finding work. It's a really, really good feeling to know that when they need something to look absolutely perfect, they choose you to do it.

I really wish I could take the time to learn the intricacies of tech but it's like running into brick wall.

also a quote for you guys:
No gain was ever made without loss
>>
“We contrast the urban and the natural, but that’s a contemporary myth. We’re animals, after all; our cities are organic products, fully as “natural” (whatever that word really means) as a termite hill or a rabbit warren. But how much more interesting: how much more complex, dressed in the intricacies and exfoliations of human culture, simple patterns iterated into infinite variation. And full of secrets, beyond counting.”

“By definition, you can’t experience your own death. Death is the end of consciousness. And consciousness persists. In the language of physics, consciousness is conserved.

I am the one who wakes up in the morning.

Always.

Every morning.

I don’t die.

I just become increasingly unlikely.”

“But smart has to have a depth as well as a length. Some smart brushes over a problem. And some smart grinds exceeding slow, like the mills of God, and it grinds fine, and when it comes up with an answer, it has been tested.”

“Stories of imagination tend to upset those without one.”

“Wisdom comes from experience. Experience is often a result of lack of wisdom.”

“Everything starts somewhere, though many physicists disagree. But people have always been dimly aware of the problem with the start of things. They wonder how the snowplough driver gets to work, or how the makers of dictionaries look up the spelling of words.”

Those aren't all of them, and those are from only two people. But... they sure as sugar changed me something awful. Or, something awfully good.
>>
>>702838714
I agree with the quote, but it views the situation from the perspective of humans.

If there is a god, they won't care whether one human lived a bad or good life. Because "good" or "bad" is something we made up.

However, if a god made us specifically, and only cares about how we use life... then that is a very stupid god. The experiment doesn't make sense because he can tell beforehand how it will turn out. If he makes it possible for humans to be "bad", then he already knows he will have to send people to "hell" or whatever. What is the point of that for an omniscient god?

For most of my life, I've been
caught in between who I really am...
and how I'm perceived,
in between categories
and definition.
I don't fit in.
And I used to think that
that was a curse, but...
now I'm slowly
starting to see...
maybe it's a blessing.
See, when you
don't fit in,
you're forced to see the world from
many different angles and points of view.
You gain knowledge, life lessons
from disparate people and places.
And those lessons, for better
or worse, have shaped me.
So, who am I?

“Do you know what it feels like to be aware of every star, every blade of grass? Yes. You do. You call it 'opening your eyes again.' But you do it for a moment. We have done it for eternity. No sleep, no rest, just endless... endless experience, endless awareness. Of everything. All the time. How we envy you, envy you! Lucky humans, who can close your minds to the endless deeps of space! You have this thing you call... boredom? That is the rarest talent in the universe! We heard a song — it went 'Twinkle twinkle little star....' What power! What wondrous power! You can take a billion trillion tons of flaming matter, a furnace of unimaginable strength, and turn it into a little song for children! You build little worlds, little stories, little shells around your minds, and that keeps infinity at bay and allows you to wake up in the morning without screaming!”

“It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.”

“The Ephebians believed that every man should have the vote (provided that he wasn't poor, foreign, nor disqualified by reason of being mad, frivolous, or a woman). Every five years someone was elected to be Tyrant, provided he could prove that he was honest, intelligent, sensible, and trustworthy. Immediately after he was elected, of course, it was obvious to everyone that he was a criminal madman and totally out of touch with the view of the ordinary philosopher in the street looking for a towel. And then five years later they elected another one just like him, and really it was amazing how intelligent people kept on making the same mistakes.”

"'Imagine,' he told me, “that I’m deliberating whether to do my duty, such as to parachute into enemy territory, or something more mundane like to risk my job by reporting on some wrongdoing. If everyone accepts that there is no free will, then I’ll know that people will say, ‘Whatever he did, he had no choice—we can’t blame him.’ So I know I’m not going to be condemned for taking the selfish option.” This, he believes, is very dangerous for society, and “the more people accept the determinist picture, the worse things will get.”

"Determinism not only undermines blame, Smilansky argues; it also undermines praise. Imagine I do risk my life by jumping into enemy territory to perform a daring mission. Afterward, people will say that I had no choice, that my feats were merely, in Smilansky’s phrase, “an unfolding of the given,” and therefore hardly praiseworthy. And just as undermining blame would remove an obstacle to acting wickedly, so undermining praise would remove an incentive to do good. Our heroes would seem less inspiring... and soon we would sink into decadence and despondency."

This has helped me with severe anxiety. This and Imodium AD (like I said, anxiety).
>>
>>702842623
"Smilansky advocates a view he calls illusionism—the belief that free will is indeed an illusion, but one that society must defend. The idea of determinism, and the facts supporting it, must be kept confined within the ivory tower. Only the initiated, behind those walls, should dare to, as he put it to me, “look the dark truth in the face.” Smilansky says he realizes that there is something drastic, even terrible, about this idea—but if the choice is between the true and the good, then for the sake of society, the true must go. Smilansky’s arguments may sound odd at first, given his contention that the world is devoid of free will: If we are not really deciding anything, who cares what information is let loose? But new information, of course, is a sensory input like any other; it can change our behavior, even if we are not the conscious agents of that change. In the language of cause and effect, a belief in free will may not inspire us to make the best of ourselves, but it does stimulate us to do so."

And now I think I understand how I need to live my life/deal with the world/etc. For now.

Reaching-for-a-new-day.jpg

This is the beginning of a new day. I have been given me this day to use as I will. I can waste it or use it for good. What I do today is very important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever, leaving something in its place I have traded for it. I want it to be gain, not loss — good, not evil. Success, not failure in order that I shall not forget the price I paid for it.

I forgot who said it, but they're right. Life is a lot less complicated than people make it seem.

>"Half as long, twice as bright."
From Infamous 2. It pretty much means to enjoy your life while you're still able to, not when you're old and riddled with diseases, muscle pains, and are pretty much dying.

>"No man should live past the point at which he begins to deteriorate."
Castro from BO1 zombies. Pretty much, if you're no longer progressing, you should probably kill yourself.

It goes without saying that I pretty much hate old people. I'm not planning on living past 60 myself, sooner if I lose a limb or some shit.

No, he means "Why are you not a hero?"
Thoreau was asking his friend why he wasn't standing up against war (he was in jail for refusing to pay a fine on the grounds that the money would go towards funding a war he opposed).
Superman is asking that guy why he doesn't see himself as someone who stands up against injustice, cruelty, and murder, since that's what Superman sees himself as.

A lot of superheroes see themselves as a separate group the people they defend. Superman just sees himself as a guy doing what he can to help others. What he is able to do is outside the scope of what most people are able to do, but the reason he does it is common decency.

¨Thermodynamic miracles... events with odds against so astronomical they're effectively impossible, like oxygen spontaneously becoming gold. I long to observe such a thing. And yet, in each human coupling, a thousand million sperm vie for a single egg. Multiply those odds by countless generations, against the odds of your ancestors being alive; meeting; siring this precise son; that exact daughter... Until your mother loves a man she has every reason to hate, and of that union, of the thousand million children competing for fertilization, it was you, only you, that emerged. To distill so specific a form from that chaos of improbability, like turning air to gold... that is the crowning unlikelihood. The thermodynamic miracle.¨ -Doctor Manhattan- Only reason to not kill miself

You know you're an adult, not just when you're able to put the needs of others above your own, but when you're able to do it without giving a single thought to what they "owe" you in return. You realize that, at some point you weren't even aware of, you became the tap instead of the bucket. And then you look back and hate your younger self for living under the delusion that somehow a world full of buckets could function.

"Too often we... enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought." - John F. Kennedy

“The personal, as everyone’s so fucking fond of saying, is political. So if some idiot politician, some power player, tries to execute policies that harm you or those you care about, take it personally. Get angry. The Machinery of Justice will not serve you here – it is slow and cold, and it is theirs, hardware and soft. Only the little people suffer at the hands of Justice; the creatures of power slide from under it with a wink and a grin. If you want justice, you will have to claw it from them. Make it personal. Do as much damage as you can. Get your message across. That way, you stand a better chance of being taken seriously next time. Of being considered dangerous. And make no mistake about this: being taken seriously, being considered dangerous marks the difference - the only difference in their eyes - between players and little people. Players they will make deals with. Little people they liquidate. And time and again they cream your liquidation, your displacement, your torture and brutal execution with the ultimate insult that it’s just business, it’s politics, it’s the way of the world, it’s a tough life and that it’s nothing personal. Well, fuck them. Make it personal.” - Richard K. Morgan

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.

It's not so much a quote as it is a lesson I've learned.

Life is a relentless game of carrot and stick. Except, instead of giving you one at a time, it gives you a carrot while it whacks your ass with the stick.

Good always comes hand in hand with the bad. It's up to you to enjoy this sadistic game or walk away from it completely. We're all a bunch of masochistic fools. But I'd rather be a fool than dead. That's the choice I've made.

I regret nothing I've done. Things happen for a reason and if you are judged for what you do, the choices you make or how you are as a person than you must accept the responsibility in order to truly be happy with yourself.

If you don't understand then you are not ready to. Life is a twisted game experience it in whichever way you please if you are discontented then you are doing it wrong.
