I think its cool you have an acoustic bass. I did some shitty black metal back in the early 2000's out of highschool. I had a band, we all didnt agree on stuff and I was taking it more serious than they were. I got signed briefly to a small label and then I kinda outgrew it and started chasing after women and getting bigger muscles. At one point I was up to 5 guitars, 1 bass, a digital drum kit, condenser microphone and once I was actually in a studio that recorded an album I never released. I ran into financial emergencies (started getting pussy) and had to slowly sell off my collection. Now I am just down to my new guitar and the microphone. The music that..somehow made it to youtube I am ashamed of to be honest lol. The album that was pro recorded I still have in my hard drive collecting dust..

Sure. Honestly, I'd look into a Peavey Vypyr if you want effects. Otherwise, there are plenty of low-wattage tube amps that are great for beginners. Tube amps generally sound warmer, and take pedals MUCH better than modeling amps.

Yep. Learning different genres and styles supports other playing. And to answer your question about bands, I'm currently playing some songs from Emperor, Dissection Opeth, Mogwai and The Chantays. Pretty "boring" and "basic" bands in their genres but fun to play nonetheless. I should play some Burzum to practice phrasing and start tabbing some less-known bands I listen. Dawn and Crimson Midwinter have awesome riffs.

I gotta say that I like the tone of Martins overall more than Gibsons, but I still love my J45. It has a compact mid-range punch that no standard Martin can get. Also enjoy that dry and understated bottom end. Martin puts out some of the richest acoustics though. A D35 is definitely in my future. All I can say is that I think both brands put out quality instruments, and if it sounds good, then buy it.
