Another Australian here. Gun violence was never an issue before the bans either. The mass shooting at Port Arthur which sparked the push for gun control was carried out with a weapon which was obtained Illegally under the already existing gun control laws.
The laws are not only overly restrictive but often nonsensical. For example: lever-actions are legal while pump-actions are not, when there is no practical difference and you can still get a semi-automatic handgun which is infinitely more useful for doing harm to human beings than a pump-action anything.
