Doing this anywhere within earth's gravitational pull wouldn't work. A stick that is that long would not move as a single object, which is counter intuitive because we don't interact with sticks that are long enough to make the lag time noticeable. Normally the energy we put on one end of a stick takes an absolutely immeasurable time to reach the other end when it's only a foot long. But when it's going to Mars, the the other end of the stick would take much much slower than the speed of light to feel any sort of force you put on your end.
It's not like the atoms of objects are physically touching, it's all just a series of electromagnetic pulses from atom to the next. Nothing is truly "solid", every atom is disconnected from each other and so it takes time for the effects of force to propagate from one atom to another.

I think what you're thinking of is the Riehmann integral, and that's only a thing if the lower sums (rectangles you mentioned) and the upper sum (slightly taller rectangles) converge against the same number.
same with the circle - only if the inner and outer squares converge against the same number, either (or rather, both) are actually pi.
