We got to this point through extensive observation and thinking which led us to set up the theory of the big bang, which is exactly what it is, a theory.
No observations and no formula has ever had the result that theoretically, there could be a god which speaks through men to command them what they should and should not do.
But, there have been studies showing how popular religions were led by influential people who told a mass of people what they wanted to hear and in change, they wanted them to do certain things, or more imortantly, not do certain things.
When intellectual and influential individuals tell a mass of crowds how they should live that doesn't mean that this neccessarily is a bad thing though.
Solely through religion, a big part of the world has become organized, hygenic and thoughtful of their neighbors.
The time of enlightenment is in its baby shoes, but it is now more developed then ever it seems.
One day humanity may not need religion any more, but that day is a day which we will not be able to witness.

The thing I worry about is that people allow (ir)religion to motivate their living patterns. When you do that, what have you gained/lost? What is the cost we pay to have motivated robots that believe their God will repay them for their deeds?
On myself: I believe we're all one mind broken up into about 7 billion bodies. We must form the true, One-Mind again. There was some form of evil/hatred that split us apart. We must find positive, loving motivations to exist together. Religion doesn't seem to be a positive, loving motivator in many cases.

People won't need religion when they don't need science, because fundamentally, they are the same, sharing the same roots.
Science and religion both become dogma in the wrong hands, and that's what people here are arguing against. The dogma, which is easy to deride and ridicule.
