Emperor took black metal and made it into something more. I like black metal, but I won't pretend to listen to bands like Mayhem, Burzum, etc.
The only "early" black metal band I ever liked was Emperor. And I think their music still holds its own to this day.
These days though I'm all up in the blackened death metal kind of stuff, or the dissonant bands like Deathspell Omega.
