Actually Star Trek Beyond is the first movie out the three rebooted films that actually feels like real star trek.
The characters aren't all hyper charged action heros, Spock actually acts like Spock etc. Written by Simon Pegg so it seems like they took it back to basics.
Yeah all the characters are there, but they are crewman, and they act like it. They don't all act like super ninja hyper charged action stars.
People have a real misconception about Kirk. All pop culture remembers is him making out with the green chick and punching people.
So the first two movies treated Kirk like that, like a frat boy, which in TOS, he wasn't. Kirk was level headed, Kirk was a good leader etc.
The rest of the crew were just crew members, not ninjas. Trek Beyond is EASILY the best of the three, and it's pretty clear that it is because of the writing.

The writers kind of ignored the character. Of course, any job he could potentially do was given to Janeway. The other captains have outspoken talents, and rarely go beyond them. Often they are largely absent from entire episodes. Janeway was written as a "strong female character" which meant she did everything from warp physics to CQB. Having a more personal, hands-on connection with the crew is the entire point of the role of First Officer. That's why Riker was playing poker with the crew and attempting to pork Troi. You don't see Picard do that shit. It's also why Sisko's second in command is a Bajoran. But with Voyager, they wanted Janeway to be the crew mom, so they only roll Chakotay out when they'd otherwise have to give the role to Harry Kim.
Chakotay has loads of hobby's that he's supposedly always been into, but were never mentioned before and are never again. They just didn't give two fucks. Robert Beltran asked for a huge raise at some point with the idea that they'd kick him out. Instead they just gave him the raise. But yeah, he was phoning it in from the moment he realized he was never going to get any proper character development.

The idea that the captain has, thusfar, always been the series focal point is kind of bullshit. The captain makes the calls on the ship, so naturally we look up to them. But the post-TOS series have had counsellors, children, criminals etc. as main characters. We don't see it "from the captain's point of view" when those characters are the focal point of their respective episodes. Star Trek has never had one ,single main character, but always an ensemble cast of main characters who are treated with equal importance.
I don't mind having a female, non-white main character. I do loathe the idea of "diversity for diversity's sake". it always seems to go to shit. Janeway is a good example. They wrote her as the female captain, and that came with the idea that she had to be "strong" and that she could never be wrong, which lead to immensely shitty writing.

Yeah, that sounds like shit. Trek episodes have always been, in effect, science fiction short stories. Trek doesn't need "tight storytelling" because the episodes are supposed to be self-contained. The tightest Trek writing we got was DS9, and it did absolutely fine with 24 episodes. In fact, that's what allowed it to showcase as many MAIN characters as it did. Instead of just one.

But Star Trek has always been that way, in TOS they added Checov later on simply because they thought it wasn't diverse enough abd they wanted a Russian so they could say "look how progressive we are we have a rusky on our show"

But it is the best of the three. Like, by far. IDK about the sjw shit, don't really care. But they boiled everything down. All the characters still have their quirks, but feel like the old characters again. Red Letter Media did a great review on it and laid it out.
Trek was about people that got along, conflict came from outside shit. Not interpersonal conflicts. Like the first two, kirk and spock constantly at it etc, like wtf.
That doesn't happen in Beyond. They FEEL like the original cast again. The ACT like they were originally written.
And you're right about most of the Trek movies, all the TNG movies were shit, and only a couple of the original films were any good.
But yeah, Beyond is worth the watch. I really enjoyed it.
