Men tend to get really focused on one thing and they do that thing really well. Not just with hobbies but with everything. They tend to be poor multitaskers, but they're good focusers.

I think you are probably right about girls not having their hobbies and interests nurtured at a young age.
I also think there is a very toxic environment that girls find themselves in around the age of 13. There are plenty of young girls interested in science, but once they hit 13 and their friend group get super catty and interested in superficial things, it becomes hard to not give up on those interests and start to feel like they are lame. There almost needs to be a big brother type program of rad 18 year old girls who make science and outdoors activities seem cool to these younger girls.
I think the other problem is that its hard to find people who have similar interests, or at the least are willing and curious to listen to what you have to say about your interests.
The other problem is that our society make us feel a bit shy about bringing up our interests. Like I'm reluctant to talk about my favorite sport, I've been doing it for 10 years, but I feel like an annoying meme-y braggart bringing it up. It's totally shitty.
I met a girl who could drop into deep and interesting conversations within two sentences. She rapidly became one of my all time favorite people. I think being able to blow thought the bullshit level people normal interact at lets us see each others passions and honestly see each other as real people, as fruity as that sounds.
