i was lucky enough to interview a wwii vet whom was on Omaha as a 16 year old kid. he had lied about his age to join the army. Survived Omaha, the reclaiming of France, and survived the Battle of the Bulge. He told me the beach landing scene was the most accurate depiction of Omaha that he had ever seen. Though, I think the story as a whole was taken from a collection of events, like Platoon. Other note worthy wwii films, A Bridge Too Far was good, Enemy at the Gates was entertaining, look up Generation War (Unere Mutter, Unsere Vater). Or look up the documentary With the Marines at Tarawa. good shit.

That the German POWs were the most professional people he encountered. A far cry from what Americans were taught to believe. Though they were not allowed out at night, because they would smoke cigarettes in hopes of attracting night bombers or enemy surveillance planes.

My grandpa was in the army during the war, but he lucked up and became an MP stationed in San Diego.
His uncle ended up in the Navy, and served in the Pacific. He always told a story about this Japanese prisoner he became friends of sorts with. He said the guy showed him a picture or a woman and a baby, and that's how they became friends. He said that it made him realize that the evil monsters they were fighting were basically just nobodies like him, who'd been yanked off their farms and told to go fight someone elses war for them.

In Normandy, this was true (usually, Sherman losses were even higher than that), but as the war in France progressed, Sherman crews learned to use their superior speed, maneuverability, range and sheer numbers to their advantage. A Tiger was slow and vulnerable from the rear, and there were never that many of them in one place. The Allies also had an advantage in France that the Germans could never overcome: complete air superiority. Any German vehicles that moved by day were likely to be attacked from the air.

This is my personal favorite. It's about the Pacific. Kinda "artsy" I guess you could say. Lots of inner dialogue. Tons of brief and brilliantly done cameos. If you've seen The New World with Colin Farrell, I think it's done by the same people. Very similar style. Kinda slow paced... like Battlefield vs. CoD. Be high.

Wish they'd make a civil war movie with the same battlefield realism as Saving Private Ryan and some of the others that followed. Gettysburg was great and had some really epic shots of massive columns engaging in open battle, but like most civil war movies, the death scenes are like old westerns where the guy clutches his chest and keels over. That war saw some extremely gory scenes because the weaponry had advanced way beyond the napoleonic tactics, so you had battlefields packed full of completely destroyed bodies, muddy with blood. They need to put that shit on film.

Yeah violence wasn't as wide spread in the media back then I would imagine and you have these young farm boys who got conscripted thrown a rifle and pretty much told them they were on an "adventure" to save europe. I lot of younger men are easily sucked into things think it's going to be a vacation while shooting a few bad guys along the way.
