Trump appeals to a specific niche of voters whereas Clinton is more of a typical politician who aims at having a broad appeal. Trumps the kind of guy who can get one very specific type of voter really fired up but tends to make everyone else nervous. It's why the Democrats didn't elect Bernie, who was a shit candidate by the way. Even during the primaries Trump only won about 40% of the Republican vote, he only won the nomination basically because the remaining 60% was divided between like eight other people and there was no clear frontrunner.
In the general election he hasn't been able to continue the momentum he had in the primaries because he is trying to appeal to the general population, most of whom are put off by his extreme positions. In truth he's not that extreme, but since most people pay less attention to what a candidate actually says and more attention to what is said about a candidate by the media and word of mouth, his actual positions don't really matter.
If the Republicans had gone with Bush or maybe Rubio or Kasich the way everyone thought they would they would probably be winning right now. Nobody except hard-core democrats and female baby boomers really likes Hillary Clinton, she's just the "safer" choice. Even Ted Cruz might have been able to beat her, and he's even more obnoxious than Trump.

Since whether women and blacks should be allowed to vote was also a divisive issue, the compromise was each state would use the results of the popular vote to nominate "electors" (bigger states got more electors) and it was the votes of those electors that were used to decide the Presidency.
