Standard is fun as fuck and it feels like you're actually making the car work for you. Automatic is nice to just relax and drive around town and hitting up the pokestops.

Because it's the future.

The year is now 2016.

Automatic transmissions are incredibly efficient compared to just 10 years ago much less 20 or even 30 years ago.

There is absolutely no reason to drive a stick unless you have a fancy sports car or something and want to feel that control over the car. You use a stick when you drive for fun, but it can get old having to shift otherwise.

It's not a troll it is true.

Manual transmissions, otherwise known as "stick shifts" have transferred into the realm of hipster-ism.

It is an inconvenient and outdated technology that exists ONLY to make a select few individuals somehow feel like they are "better" than others because they choose to use some obscure method of driving that few others choose to do.

While it is true that years ago a manual had practical benefits (better gas mileage) that is simply no longer the case.

There is absolutely reason to drive a manual on a new car unless you are an insufferable hipster.

In conclusion, yes. A stick shift is indeed a car fedora.

In older cars, yes. You get better MPG.

In new cars with new automatic this is not true. You do not get better MPG. There is no practical benefit to a manual transmission in modern cars. In fact, modern automatics get better gas mileage than a manual.

>>
>>699230489
It is still the case, a manual transmission always weighs less than it's automatic counterpart, always offers more efficient power transfer to the driveline no matter how close newer automatics get, and clearly you have never driven a manual because it's very engaging and fun and really isn't really something there for "hipsters" or people who want to be better. I understand wanting an automatic for convenience or long trips, but it is certainly not a "car fedora" that is actually b8.
>>
>>699231009
OK, you have a point. I had not thought of that.

As a former grease monkey I should have thought of that. However, I have simply had not had time or patience to work on my car myself for years so I did not.

Yes, if you want the convenience of fixing a transmission yourself a manual is still the way to go . I will concede your point on this.

Just learn how to drive in general if you have 20 tons behind you.

Seriously, it's like 90% of the truck drivers on the interstate in the last 10 years are literally retarded.

"Oh, there's a huge hill coming up soon? Better get in the passing lane so I can slow down traffic for everyone else until I inevitably drop below 45mph and have to get back into the lane I just fucking came from without actually accomplishing the pass I switched lanes to do in the first place.

EVERY FUCKING DAY.

It's gotten so bad that I have seriously considered (and after reading this WILL DO) getting a dash camera and I absolutely WILL REPORT every, single, fucking, jack-ass truck driver who does this shit as well as all the other jack-assery I see from truck drivers in the last few years.

You know those, "How am I driving?" numbers?

I'm going to start calling them. If that doesn't work, I'm going to social media or whatever it takes to get this shit-class drivers off the road until trucking companies actually develop some standards for their drivers.

ESPECIALLY the ones who do this shit:

>Be me driving on interstate at around 70MPH in far-right lane.
>Slowly coming up on 18-wheeler doing 65MPH or so.
>I use turn signal and go into passing lane to go around.
>Be in passing lane and 30 or so feet from said 18-wheeler when SUDDENLY
>18-wheeler driver decides to let Satan take the wheel and darts into the passing lane, despite my obvious presence 10 feet from their bumper forcing me to slam on my brakes.
>18-wheeler driver then decides to take 25 minutes to pass a car going 65 MPH by going 65.01MPH themselves.
>The car the 18-wheeler driver is passing speeds up to 65.5 MPH.
>This does not concern the 18-wheeler driver who continues to go 65.01.
>10 minutes later the vehicle the 18-wheeler driver was attempting to pass is now far ahead of them.
>18-wheeler driver goes back into right-hand lane.

EVERY GOD DAMNED DAY. I would swear that truck drivers drive like assholes on purpose if I didn't happen to know for a fact that most of them are now inexperienced dumbshits looking for a higher paycheck than the McDonalds job they were working literally 2 days before they were approved to drive a 50-ton road machine.

It's fucking stupid. I'm not a big fan of making laws to force things because you would think common sense should apply, but the companies doing this shit do not give a FUCK. It's sad that it seems a law will need to be made before these things happen.

I'm going to end this thread. If you don't like manual, it is because:
1.You're a bad driver and shouldn't have a license
2.You haven't driven a manual
3.You live in a congested city
4 You are missing one or more limbs

Dude.

I'm not even kidding.

In my daily commute to work Monday-Friday on my way home there are two steep hills on the interstate (maybe 5% grade? I dunno, but pretty steep) in my 20 mile drive.

Almost every single day a truck will be behind another truck going slowly up the hill and decide they are going to pass.

Of course, on that steep a grad ANY truck will not be able to handle it AND accelerate at the same time.

They will end up going to the passing lane, end up going SLOWER or the SAME SPEED as the truck they are attempting to pass and either end up making EVERYONE go 50MPH up the hill OR end up going back to the right-hand lane after a few minutes of them being side-by-side.

Oh and they have NO regard for vehicles about to pass them if they decide to switch to the passing lane.

It's annoying for sure. But, my biggest point here is that it seriously happens almost every day. I'm not kidding, it happens almost EVERY DAY.

My wife notices it too and so do my co-workers. We all complain and joke about how shit the truck drivers are here.

My wife is easily startled. If she is a passenger and we were just out for the day and going home I cannot count the number of times she has let out a little yelp at these hills when a truck basically pulls into the passing lane and cuts us off/almost hits us.

This is in Missouri on I-44 by the way.

as a germanfag I can confirm:
Auto is way better than manual.
>>
>>699236884
>>699237392

And even for fast cars, usually manual is worse. Lamborghini is using sequential stick (wich is essentiall auto with the option to do manual), same goes for most sports and racing cars. There was a time when auto would reduce the power of a car, but those times are long gone, at least for more expensive cars.

>>
>>699237874
Yup, fast enough for me. I think it's like a second slower on auto but I'm not sure.

>>699236153
Fast enough. I don't really care for 0-60 acceleration all that much. Handling is great stock, breaks necks while driving through the city, relatively lightweight/doesn't feel bloated, and it has plenty of mod options when the time comes. If I had a chance to get a new car again, I'd still get the BRZ/FRS/GT86.
>>
>>699237767
But why on earth would you start going up the hill then decide to try to pass when you KNOW, you SHOULD KNOW, that it will be impossible for you to do so?

I mean, if you know for a fact that your truck will not be able to maintain speed while going up the hill- and you know for a fact that you will, in fact, lose speed while going up the hill - why would you STILL TRY TO PASS.

Also, why the fuck would you cut across to the passing lane when you see a line of smaller cars closing in on you in the passing lane to pass (because they can actually maintain speed on a hill) and force them all to slow down from 70MPH to 60MPH behind you.

Why would you do such a thing unless you were a completely inconsiderate asshole? You would have to do such a thing ON PURPOSE.

You KNOW what you are doing is being an asshole and you do it ON PURPOSE. Not only that, but you put the people behind you in danger by causing the lead car to have to brake so that they don't crash into your truck driving dumb ass.

It ain't that easy for a new driver mate. You have to get just the right amount of revs when you get to the bite point, and you have to release the right point. Otherwise the engine will start lugging or conversely you'll jolt forward, which is obviously not a smooth shift.
