If you take a flashlight for example and press it against a colored translucent object like a britta bottle or a purple n64 controller you'll find that while most light passes some gets trapped and illuminates the whole object ( like a lantern). If the situation that light was bouncing off the ground and hitting the bottom of clouds, then it would look a lot different. You can even see the top of the clouds are often darker, indicating that the light isn't passing through them, which is also obvious otherwise overcast days would be brighter.
In a direct line from the sun, it lights a streak across clouds as if it is underneath them. This would be impossible if the earth was flat and the sun hung above it.
Here is an extreme example of what would be impossible if the sun was floating above the earth as you say.
