Yes exactly. Science has become rather unscientific, almost as a result of professionalism. When it was all passionate gentlemen goofing around with chemicals in their sheds at least it was honest because the only incentive was discovery itself. The rational thing to do now is regard a great deal of the scientific literature being produced with skepticism and as far as one is able to, both logistically and in terms of expertise, read through it and parse the wheat from the chaff oneself.

That's definitely true. Psychology, in my personal opinion, is still in the very early stages of what it could achieve. But it's definitely getting somewhere - you can't say that the field hasn't produced any experiments of worth.
One of the fundamental problems I think is that ethics holds back a lot of interesting potential experiments. Think about what fascinating insights you could gain into the human mind with unlimited funding and complete carte blanche when it comes to the law.

Not him but psychology fails because it only looks at isolated individuals and basically uses an extremely thin veneer of science to try and reify anything about that person in a very subjective manner. People only make sense in a social context.
Also the modern mental health institution is mostly bullshit, along with much of the DSM. Read some Thomas Szasz or Michel Focault for a detailed explanation on why.

I will agree, the science in its current state is very unrefined and could do with a revolution. But it's also a relatively new science, and tackling a topic that is way beyond the scope of our current understanding.
And psychology has been proven to work in real world situations. PTSD, child abuse, the psychology of murders - the list goes on. So it's not like it hasn't contributed anything to society.
