I've had the opportunity to hunt/shoot a giraffe. I didn't want to because they weren't even alarmed by our presence. Just chilling. However they do eat a lot. And when rain comes once a year the grass and leaves are a limited resource; perhaps better spent feeding the other animals on your land. So they are killed from time to time to maintain equilibrium within your herds. If you didn't hunt the animals on your land they would overpopulate and starve in the next drought. Something Ive seen with my own eyes. Not a pretty sight.
Tl;dr: shooting giraffes is sometimes neccesary for the common good of all animals in your herds. The real sport is hunting the smaller, more wary antilopes though.

I have no fucking idea whether or not it was for charity. I fucking said that I didn't know if it was charity or commercial. And I honestly don't care whether or not it was charitable. My point was that I appreciated that the animals are consumed and not wasted. My concern is with the value the animal's death brings to a group of people. And yeah, my family has paid a lot for hunts, but most of what they pay for the trips stays in the community where they hunt. Considering that some of my family made their money off of tourism and hospitality, I see the value in them contributing in kind to another economy. I think that's better than giving blindly and hopefully to a charity with murky accountability. And I've never gone on a safari, but I do hunt and I've had good hunts and bad, all with the same guns. So I appreciate it as a sport of some skill and even more chance. I've never killed an animal that I, or someone else, didn't consume. I actually haven't hunted deer for years because I find I can't use it all and don't want to waste it. I stick to birds and fish these days.
