I work in an IT field and I'm in nursing school.
This year, I lost my mom to cancer then my job fired me because they wouldn't work with my nursing clinical schedule. I got my job back at a different store. Ended a 3 yr relationship and moved out, started living in my car for a few months. Car broke down and i'm unable to afford the repairs. A coworker knew about my situation and let me to move in with them. I applied for the full time position doing what I do now but I'm part time, and they literally HANDED it to someone else who worked an entirely different department. I get praised consistently on how well I'm doing, I have even been recognized and received honorary mention from our district manager(s) in regards to how strong my performance is at work, but yet they hand it to someone who literally knows nothing about IT support... I am the most under-paid person in my department. I'm also starting to wonder if it's a bit of sexism, considering I am the only female in my department, they refuse to move me up within the company. I've attempted 3 times to move up and they give it to people who don't even work in my god damn area. It pisses me off. I put my heart and soul into everything that I do. I come in early and stay late for almost all of my shifts. I pick up so much slack from my co-workers because most of them are lazy incompetent jerk-offs. Our direct supervisor doesn't know anything about IT support either, but yet he's our supervisor and it's up to us to train him. I don't even know how in the hell he got the position. Everything is just so underhanded and backwards at my work and it's pissing me off because none of it makes any logical sense. I've watched over the years of working of young people just coming and going with no loyalty to their companies. You're still young, and not tied down with family obligations (and then you'd feel really stuck because you can't afford to change jobs easily), so be fluid in terms of work. There's a company out there that'll be happy to have you on their team. Be prepared to find the best fit for yourself, because no one else will do that for you.
There are companies out there that are incredibly blind when it comes to judging work performance. If you see no way the system will change, take your talents elsewhere. I know, you feel it's easier said than done, but believe me when I say it's a lot easier for you than for someone older, like myself.

I have my annual review coming up later this month, I have a pay-rate set in mind. If I can't negotiate with them to meet what I'm requesting ($1.50 more per hour), then I'm putting in my two weeks and going to continue looking elsewhere.
