with the Grand Evil Thing and then a big explosion and end credits.

X had far more tactically interesting fights than most other games in the series. Knowing who was going next was a fun diversion from the ATB system and if it took you more than 3 seconds to make up your mind you probably just sucked at it. The fact that they give you the time is there for the harder fights once each character has 3 sphere tracks worth of abilities.
And yes, you are dense if you missed the pretty good story just because of 1 bad and 2 mediocre voice actors.

Terra is the main character if you play the game to near 100% completion and see all the cut scenes. The game feels very different if you only recruit Celes, Edgar, and Setzer in the World of Ruin. You only see scenes of isolation and resolve.
The game is not terribly deep but it does an excellent job of crafting its simple narrative around whoever you pick and making main characters out of them.

The story, pacing, setting, music, everything is just perfect. I grew up a little by playing this game as a kid.
Worst: Final Fantasy XIII
This game is a great example of how a video game should not look like.
Underrated: Final Fantasy VIII
This one holds a special place in my heart because it was my first Fantasy. I played it still very young and as X, this game taught me a few things I wouldn't come to as a 10 yo kid.
Overrated: Final Fantasy VII
The game is great, but I suspect a lot of it is the case of first Fantasy experience. What I find overrated though is Aerith and her end.

It was 3 to 99% of FF fans at the time. Famicon games were something you heard about or read in magazines. The Japanese releases of the actual 2 and 3 bombed heavily over there. IV was the second game to save the company so they decided the bury 2 and 3 and release IV across the world as 2. V bombed in Japan and once again, threatened with losing investor confidence, they pulled out the stops and crafted VI. With much fanfare they shared it with the world as FF 3.

Nah, I only ever played it solo. Didn't have any friends that played it. I just really liked the game and I still play it every once in a blue moon. It's pretty fun just populating your home town and building each family up, the zones and the music was really good too.

Enix is the cancer that killed Square. That is pretty much an era when gaming radically changed. Before gaming became a mass market for normies. A lot of the subtle themes in games back then are just totally absent from today's market, and are not understandable to people playing them outside of the context of the era they were made in.

there is a lot of anti-establishment ideology in old games like ffvi, syndicate, half-life, metal gear... that doesn't necessarily suggest anarchy or socialism, or sjwism (which didn't exist at the time) alternatives but just sort of prompts you to question things and realize things are not perfect and and we should continue to search for better alternatives. sorry i know the examples of games i provided is lacking, its late, im drunk, but the idea is that gaming in that age heavily influenced me to not conform without committing to any specific ideology

I just want to be sure we are on the same page. The older games also taught kids adult issues and philosophies without spoonfeeding I think. At the moment I am questioning whether I experienced Journey as a piece of art in the way I did because I was raised by older video games, or if I'd still experience it in the way I did without past video game experiences. Maybe I'll do an experiment and ask my mother to play it.
