The last time I lived in Las Vegas, my house was about 300 yards from the Nellis fence. Whenever they'd bring the B-52s out and spin up the engines, we'd feel the ground rumble like an earthquake before we'd hear the sound. Wickedly impressive power.

B-17, B-29 and P-51 were all ahead of their time. I'll give props to the A6M Zero as well considering how behind in aviation technology Japan was when they designed it.
I'll pick the often-overlooked B-70 Valkyrie. The technical specs on this thing are just incredible, especially considering it was designed in the 60s. Shame it never went into production due to budget constraints.

The introduction of the first Soviet surface-to-air missiles in the late 1950s put the near-invulnerability of the B-70 in doubt. In response, the US Air Force (USAF) began flying its missions at low level, where the missile radar's line of sight was limited by local terrain. In this low-level penetration role, the B-70 offered little additional performance over the B-52 it was meant to replace. It was, however, far more expensive and had shorter range. Other alternate missions were proposed, but these were of limited scope

In any case, I never said it would have been useful at that phase of the Cold War. But it had the ability to cruise at Mach 3, at more than 60,000 feet altitude over a range of more than 6,000 miles while carrying a payload of 50,000 lbs. No other aircraft in history, including present day, can match that, despite the fact that it's 50 years old.

My grandfather was lead navigator for a squadron of ~100 of these works of art.
One of the first missions he flew he decided not to wear his flak jacket (didn't see the point) and sat on it instead. She'll exploded under his plane, took out the ball turret operator and peppered the plane with holes. When he got up there was a piece of flak that made it through the plane, through his chair, and stopped at the jacket.

Work at the airbus factory (UK, not actually with airbus tho). Literally land and takeoff at work 1-2 times a day.
Amazing.
It is a new kind of aircraft, similar lines to the super guppy, but with more thought in it. This aircraft functions by being so ugly, the ground actually repels it. It's the only explanation for flight.
The Spad.
Give me some time over target.
Best
>>698263864
>The Army will field it for another 20 years if they get their way
The Army doesn't operate the A-10. It never has and it never will. The Air Force operates it. The problem is that it's a one-mission aircraft that's only effective in a specific type of situation against a specific type of target. It's far too slow, and far too short a range and lack any sort of stealth, high-altitude or electronic countermeasures to enable it to penetrate A2/AD environments, which severely limits its usefulness. As if that weren't bad enough, it operating costs are exploding due to its age. Newer aircraft can fill the same role with far greater versatility and survivability.

The YF23 and the F22 were competing designs from Northrop and Lockheed respectively for the same specification. the F22 won the competition.

>>698263665
Which is why I said Claire Lee Chennault got it right.
P40's were outmatched by the Zero. It was not as fast, could not climb as well and could not turn as well....
...but they could out dive the fuck outta some Zero's. The metal wing allowed for 480 mph dive speeds and were readily available to the AVG before the war even started for the US.

Great speed and maneuverability, but it's not as stealthy as either the F-22 or F-35 and doesn't have as good of sensors or electronic countermeasures. Not sure about its range or weapons payload. That might still be classified.

But P-40s was all the US was willing to give so he dealt with it.
Also, the AVG mostly tussled with the JAAF and not the IJN, so they didn't see Zeros much.
