My cat yesterday left me with bleeding scratches on my bicep because I was carrying him and he got scared by another person. Did I get even the slightest bit angry? Not at all.
He's missed the litter tray, pissed on the sofa when we first got him (he had a UTI, we didn't know that), woken us up at all sorts of hours, jumped off the curtains onto my balls, and refused food that he loved the previous day.
The only time I even raised my voice at my cat was the balls incident, and when he woke me up at 5am. Any fluffy pony tried that shit they'd be pillowed and cheese grated to death. Why? Because they're cute, and torturing cute things is the whole reason we have fluffy ponies.

Most people in-universe just don't care about fluffies that much. Their plight is too big to handle, so many just adopt the "They're just biotoys" rhetoric just so they can sleep well despite fluffy families starving in the streets.
I enjoy stories where abuse is legal but frowned-upon way more than ones where it's considered normal. We *KNOW* it's not normal, so treating it as a dark, socially unacceptable secret is much easier to emphatize with than making it out as a normal thing for the characters.
I tend to dislike that kind of fluff stuff for the same reason i dislike "The Purge", i just, maybe naively, buy that our culture is that fucked that given permission we'd gleefuly murder a baby talking animal for luls without at least some sort of personal or outside "dude that's kind of fucked up.
