I work in mental health, and our treatment of depression is definitely part of the problem. We're quick to put people on medicine to change brain chemistry, and I almost NEVER SEE IT WORK.
What works is counseling/therapy. We need social connections. Preferably family, secondarily through our community. Like religion or not, the sense of community we gain through church combats depression excellently.

I am also lucky and come from a good family; I moved back home after college, and they kept a good eye on me while I was weaning off the meds. It probably would have taken me a few more years had I started working immediately, but I hated the meds so much, I couldn't see myself taking them forever.
