Really, I could teach a class on several historical and philosophical topics off the top of my head, I just have a good handle on and head for such subjects. Learning about them is a hobby for me rather than the grinding drudgery it is for most people.
So, I assume most people won't find that interesting because being well learned'd in the humanities is not only something most people would give less than 2 shits for, it is also horrifyingly useless in most fields of work. That isn't to say having a BA is useless. Just the actual knowledge you may collect and memorize is unimportant. The important thing is to learn how to think and communicate critically and clearly.

Eh...it's kinda sad, because I'm 30 and I have no career. My wife supports us. I work, but I keep getting laid off (2 times in 2 years, quite frustrating...and no, it wasn't the drugs, I was laid off along with many other employees in both cases).

Thing is, it isn't the initial kicking of the habit that is tough (though the sickness is awful), or even the weeks of depression and boredom that follow. I know I said I've been using for a decade and a half, but that's off and on. The longest I've been clean is around 9 months, and most recently I was clean for about 3 months. I've been to re-hab, NA, whatever, they help in a sense...
But it always comes back around. I'm feeling healthy and fine, clean, off the drugs, etc. But my life doesn't improve. I get bored. Inevitably, I use again, telling myself "It'll just be occasional.", knowing I'm lying to myself.
My problem is really finding a calling that will keep me occupied and entertained with life. I admit, I haven't really spent enough time clean to figure things out...I need a good couple years of clean living, go back to school, find a trade....

I order and use mescaline regularly, I don't even take high doses, I've been taking 300mg for past year or so, I just tried 250mg thus past weekend and it was awesome, didn't get the body load it seems to usually give me, but I still got like 90% of the mental high.
I've tried dmt, and LSD as well. I worry way to much about how my trips going to go before I start so LSD always goes south for me, and dmt isn't my thing. More frequently then you might think, I think my body has become, to some extent, very used to the opiates and somehow compensates.
I usually shit once or twice a day. If I'm using a lot, I might not shit for 2-3 days and then have a monster come out that I have to break up, and even than usually clog the toilet. If I'm using significantly less than usual, well, then I'm shitting like 6-10 times a day at best, sometimes more (and it's horrible, liquid disgusting) depends on how bad my withdrawal gets; If I'm going cold-turkey, tapering, etc. It also depends what I'm taking, Oxy-contin used to and morphine still does bung me up like a cork. On Hydro-morphone or my standard emergency opiate codeine, I shit on the regular.
I also eat surprisingly healthy, a lot of fruits and raw vegetables, but that's more to do with me being lazy and unwilling to cook anything. but it does help the bowels.

To digress a little, I remember one time I was at the train station, going through early stages of withdrawal, and my bowels decided to loosen.

Hey, that's ok though, I work in a hospital and one time we got a guy brought in by the emergency services for opiate overdose.
The man was a mess, extremely skinny, of course he had AIDS, hepatitis B and C and all the fun stuff, he didn't have a meal for days, only took morphine.
My point is, we had to patch him up. And the only thing you could smell for the 3 next days in the whole floor where is room was was the smell of his shit. He sat there shitting all the time for 3 days straight.

I do enjoy the taste of some alcohol, though I don't drink it like I would drink a soda or juice. A nice sipping whiskey is delightful. I don't know why I enjoy the taste, I can see why people hate the taste. I think it all depends on how and why you are drinking something. Sipping on whiskey is as much about the flavour as it is about the warm glow it spreads.
As for beer, sometimes after a long day the taste of a good quality beer can be absolutely wonderful to me. I dunno, I don't entirely understand it either. Sometimes beer seems like the most appetizing thing in the world, sometimes it's just a way to get alcohol in me.
But, yeah, sometimes I really enjoy the taste of an alcoholic beverage. Not ALL alcoholic drinks, but some.

Yeah, that's hitting rock bottom pretty hard. I've always had a sense of priorities, and opiates by some miracle have never been No. 1. Having a roof over my head and food in my belly always beats getting a fix. Junkies like the one you are describing make people think we're all complete messes, but I'm fairly certain most junkies are like me, functional, and remain so.
However, I've seen enough people hit that critical mass where they become like the man you describe, and it's very easy to veer towards that. I've done some terrible things, but those were in my past...so far.
I want to get clean, I feel like a slave to this drug, and I keep coming back to it. I may be functional now, but who knows what might snap inside me. And it's such a waste of money, plus the soaring highs do not make up for the crushing lows. The lows tend to last longer and are progressively harder to deal with.
But, it's my fault, I blame no one else, and therefore it's my responsibility to figure out how to get my shit together...again.
