Need some older anons to give me advice.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to your 18 year old/young self?

>be me
>turned 18 3 months ago
>no fucking clue about the world
>wtf is adult life?
>what do?
>>
get a decent job that includes a 401K and max it up to the employee match limit. Do this every paycheck for the rest of your life.

- Don't spend to much time worrying. Things tend to work out as long as you keep a positive attitude.
- Accept the fact that you do not understand the world and you never will. Embrace it instead of worrying about it.

Of all options available pick the one that has the highest earning potential
And persue it exclusively

Try to have fun with it
>>

>Start lifting

This is actually good advice.
>>
always be networking and looking to jump ship for better opportunities. The days of company loyalty and staying in a job for years "working your way up" are over. Aim to increase your earnings by 5-10K every 2 years. You will do this by mercilessly switching jobs, altering your skillset and moving around the country. Sorry.
>>
Don't be an alcoholic for the next 9 years, and don't start smoking again after quitting 2 years. Also that dumb bitch won't be worth getting so caught up over for so long
>>
Not op but, advice in terms of career/major?
>>
Study abroad! Do a bachelor or masters abroad - it will change you to the better. Learn to stand on your own feet, get education and see/learn a different culture - makes you a better grownup!

>>696516460
I would have learned to stop being a fucking pussy and stand up for myself. Do not let people push you around. Life is too short to bend at the whim of other people. Assert yourself, show your dominance, and never let people treat you like trash.
>>
>>696517086
This.

Fucking this.
>>
>>696517097
engineering, banking, financing. nothing with 'studies' in the title.

Or consider becoming a tradesman, they do well, retire early, and always have an industry.

Its actually pretty simple- think of things people will pay other people to do. Millenials have never figured that shit out.
>>
>>696516926
I have to agree with this. You'll feel better, look better, be more confident and people won't fuck with you as much.
>>
- Don't be afraid of anyone or anything, really! (if you are anxious type)
- Stay healthy and fit!
>>
Be methodic with your study so you are good for it when you enter college and she stop pursiung that girl; she doesn't deserve you.

OH, don't abandon karate either and don't stop going to church.

Go running every morning like you used to and keep your friends close, you won't get new ones in college.

Talk to your parent's, you will very much miss them.

Please don't put a banana into your ass, you won't be able to poop it out
>>
>>696517097
honestly, don't go to college right now.
>(((Anecdotal))) I have 2 nephews, one just finished law school, the other went to industrial glass trade school. Guess which one makes 100K and which one is unemployed?

>Find a skilled trade you don't hate -- TIG welding, HVAC, apprentice yourself to an old boomer who knows both the handskills and the business development side of it, and become a contractor...you own your time, your life and the profits of your labor are yours.
>>
and dont get hung up on looking for your fucking calling, what you were 'meant to do'. You were meant to try not to starve to death and fuck whenever possible. Get a job that allows you to do those things well, and youll enjoy your life. This follow your dreams bullshit it out of control.

This. There's a difference between being the good kind of kissass, and the pussy kind of being a kissass. Don't seek the approval of your inferiors.
Aside of all that, have friends. Try to be just generally friendly to everyone, it will open up so many opportunities in life, and just generally make you a happier person.

>>
>>696517041
This is true. I was company loyal for 4 years and worked for low pay. Finally an old friend I met told me to do something similar and it felt like it opened my eyes.

Plus if you have a job but can't switch tell your employer you will quit in a short time so you can go work at another company. They will bump your pay check to keep you on board.

>>696517827
i would add the caveat that it's generally a bad idea to accept a counteroffer from your current employer. Whether it's a ruse or not, it flags you as a future liability to them, and they'll shitcan you at the first opportunity.
>>
>>696517891

>buy a mension

>>
Not OP but I'm going into Animation, any advice on what area I should work in? (Movie Cgi/Game designing/Western 2d animation/Anime)
>>
Try and avoid student loans if possible. Make sure you apply for any and all scholarships. Network as much as you can, these are the people that will help you move up when you're starting your career. Try and get as many relevant internships or jobs as you can for your major.

If you're not going to school, find a career path and take the steps necessary to get there. Certs, experience, whatever. Don't stop learning.

Try and have fun but get your shit done.

high school WAS bullshit, but college isn't. the work isn't hard, but you won't get the most for your money if you dont talk to your professors and make friends in your major.

also, start cooking good food for yourself ASAP. buy and freeze chicken/tilapia and cook in advance of the week over the weekend, then thaw things out. NEVER room with slobs - that means anybody, ANYBODY who doesn't clean their dishes as part of their meal.

don't fall for your friends. if you're bi (which half of college students end up being), don't tell anybody except as required/if it comes up. leaving the closet is bullshit and you'll never escape it

finally, maybe most important, if you have no idea what to do right now before college, JUST DONT GO TO COLLEGE YET. work for a year, think, THEN go and do youre pre-reqs/gen ends etc. youll be a little older, a lot wiser and that much less in debt. the year-off in between is one of the best decisions you can make as long as you dont live in the suburbs.....if youre not in a city that is. if you are in a city, take the year off. if not, i feel u, escape the woods.

If you're serious (and if you are, I'm not really sure why you'd look HERE for advice, but be that as it may), here is one simple thing to remember:

i've been posting financial/career advice but i'd also give myself dating advice too:

>everything your mom told you about "being an understanding partner, being fair, kind, treating her like you'd like to be treated...is wrong.

Don't be a dick for dick's sake, redpill style, but realize women are repelled by someone who fawns over them. The most important thing is being excellent. Whatever your thing is (mine was starting my own design firm), focus on that and give it your all...when women sense you have huge responsibilities and drive...AND STILL SHOW INTEREST IN THEM...it reverses the thirst dynamic. They feel 'chosen' rather than begged.

>Date a lot, but make it a distant focus behind skill acquisition, financial betterment, male friend teamups, creative output. If you're awesome, you get someone awesome. If you're sad and thirsty you get nothing/someone worse than nothing.
>>
>>696516460

Ask an old man about his life and he'll mention a few things. Work always comes up, sometimes travel, sometimes kids - but he'll almost always mention his wife, his ex-wife, or his widow. This shows you how important it is to choose the right mate, after 80 years of life, this is what he chooses to talk about. You could waste decades of your life if you make the wrong choice, especially if you have kids with her. Dont marry under pressure from anyone, dont marry because you think it's "time to grow up", dont marry because she's fun, or hot or sucks your balls dry - all of that shit ends eventually.

Many women are constantly trying to change you - avoid these women.
With many women you always feel a struggle for control - avoid these women.
Some women always compare you other men - avoid these women.
Attention seekers / narcissists - avoid these women at all costs.

There are other types but if you keep away from these basics you'll avoid most pitfalls that least to prolonged misery.

>>696516460

You get what you earn in life. Nobody is going to care more about you, than you. You may have a wife that loves you and all that, but ultimately, it's YOU who needs to advance yourself. It's YOU who needs to work towards that advancement relentlessly if you want to "make it big". It's YOU who will ultimately decide where you head in life.

Now that you know all that, stay focused on establishing yourself. Go to college. Major in something that will be useful in the years to come like Computer Science (yes it's a lot of work, but it'll be worth it when you're making fat stacks each week and don't have to worry about bills).

Most of all, live in the hear and now. Enjoy life. Don't become complacent and miss out on the best things in life.

Do not do history. Its one of the most oversubscribed courses on the planet. Maths is always a good choice if you're not sure of what career you want though, even in an unrelated sector purely because it shows how much hard work and dedication you will put in; but other than that, if the degree you want to do isn't vocational eg: journalism, engineering etc, there is very little use in university.

Same Anon. I've had Secondary level education in Art,Engineering and Construction so I have a few options but I am mainly interested in animation. Should I try and get a BA Degree in animation or should I go for a lower level course? The BA course is 4 years long and Id have to do a 1-2 year course to qualify for it, Though I could get the low level course straight away and it is 2-3 years long. Which one should I go for? Is the BA Degree worth it?

I'm almost 25 and still figuring it out. I'm hopefully going to go for my B.S. in Business Management by spring time.

Best thing you can do is make a list. I'm talking an actual list. Write down your ideas and options and weigh the pros and cons. You're young so you can either A. Join the military. B. Go to college. C. Get a shitty low-paying job. Or D. Learn an apprenticeship.

Adult life really sucks dick. I bought my first car when I was 23 and having to pay for full coverage on my second car sucks ass. It's expensive and I don't make much because I'm on disability. But the good thing is that I likely and hopefully won't have to pay hardly anything for my degree.

My dream is to become an executive at a bank or financial services company. Something like Chase, Discover, Bank of America, Capital One, Barclays Bank of Delaware, HSBC, etc.

My plan is to try and get my B.S. and then pursue an MBA with a concentration in Finance.

Hi anon,

Not too old, but I'm a fairly stable 27 year old with a physics phd.

Basic advice:
1) learn emotional self-regulation (and read the wikipedia). That alone will keep you from burning bridges that need not be burnt.

2) Eat healthily and work out in some form. start early.

3) Start investing now. Set aside a small percentage of your $$ every week or month and out it somewhere reasonable. Try acorns maybe. Don't fucking touch that money under any condition.

4) Enjoy your work or studies, whatever it may be.

>>
>>696516460
Your feelings and pain are irrelevant.
If that just made you feel bad, then you have failed to understand what I told you.
You'll only experience any real happiness when you give up on it in the present, and do things that make you uncomfortable for the sake of a better life in the future.
If you're feeling nervous before you talk to that girl, that doesn't matter, just fucking do it.
If it's exhausting and difficult to workout, that doesn't matter, just fucking do it.

And last of all, happiness is overrated. Serenity is what you must strive for.

I don't agree with most advice concerning money. You learn to live with what you have so long as you don't downgrade your lifestyle. I'm currently doing pretty good in terms of income and while I would've advised not to care about money some time ago can't fathom going back to making 60k. Once you get a high standard of living you can't go back.

IMO the really valuable stuff from university isn't actually in the course, university teaches you how to learn and how to solve problems, gives you a network of likeminded people, and gives you opportunities like studying abroad, work placements and internships, thats really what you're paying for, and you get that no matter what degree you take

you can make money with a music or art degree if you're smart, you just have to find your own way of doing it, and uni teaches you the skills you need to do that

i'm fucking glad i'm not american though, university is great but its not worth $100000, if you have that kind of money you're better off using it to start a business

Get out in the world and meet people from other cultures. Gain a worldwide perspective and use other cultures to gain insight in your own life.

Learn everything you can. Not only academics. Everything in life is a learning process, and you should take that to your advantage and try a little harder. You'll be better than other mediocres.

Challenge yourself in every possible way.

I was born into a lot of wealth and a safe good home. I have been unhappy for the majority of my life. Everything changed when i started working in a simple storage department at a shitty company. I learned to work hard and appreciate the litteler things. Then i movet to another country to pursue an edeucation in a field i find to be my calling.

It'll be different for you, as we're probably very different. Everyone is.

tl;dr travel, learn, work, do stupid shit, do smart shit. Get to know yourself and use every oppertunity to become better.

Haven't gone to college yet, dumbass but the university I will be going to doesn't have dorms and I'll be doing it all online. And no it's not a DeVry or ITT Tech either. College isn't about making fucking friends. It's about making yourself marketable to an employer and getting something that says "hey I studied X now I'm good at it".

That's it. If you studied business, go work in business. If you studied engineering, become an engineer. If you studied biology/chemistry, go to med school. But if you focused more on making fake ass friends that will leave you as soon as they graduate, get a job, settle down with a family, and move halfway across the country, then congratulations, you played yourself.

You don't need a 4.0 to get a fucking degree. Maybe in certain fields but I've known very dumb people that have a college degree and they barely make more than I do.

Networking is important but I guarantee your hipster fucking professor told you that Linkedin is your savior, right?

That whole "it's not what you know, it's who you know" is partially bullshit. Some people you know are only in the business to fuck you over. I've known PLENTY of people that could have gotten me jobs with great companies but decided to rain on my parade. You can't trust anyone.

Bottom line? Work really fucking hard and never settle for anything but the best.

Also, since you're such a special goddamn snowflake, what did YOU do in college?

Nice trips but if you think doing a trade and joining a union is all fun and games and great, you'd be wrong.

And I'm far from an idiot. My father used to have his own hair salon and my cousin has his own electrical business.

Let's do the math: SUBWAY (Private company, owned by Doctor's Associates Inc.)

The initial franchise fee for a Subway store is $15,000. You need minimum net worth of $80,000 and available cash of at least $30,000, but those amounts can go higher, according to Entrepreneur.com.Start-up costs, including the franchise fee, will probably total $116,200 to $262,850 for a store.
A Subway franchisee owes 12.5% of what the store brings in every week (gross sales excluding sales tax) to the corporate office. About two-thirds of that amount covers the franchise royalty, and the rest is put toward ads. And that's one of the cheaper ones. Also a brand new car and Uber? Yeah enjoy getting robbed. Have you read the news lately about Uber?

Trade school isn't all it's cracked up to be. If you want bad knees, a bad back and a shitton of hernias, learn a trade like HVAC and be a dumbass. My uncle is a tradesman and he's disabled now because of it.

-You will fuck up nearly every plan for your life you make right now. That being said, make those plans. Learning how to adjust plans and goals is a skill that sticks with you forever.

-Go for that girl. Much like other anons have already said, she's not worth your time. But hearing it and experiencing it are two totally different lessons.

-save a little bit of money for a rainy day. Two words on the subject that I received; 1. Whenever you get money, pay YOURSELF before you pay anyone else, even if you can only swing 10 bucks. Become your own bill collector. 2. A safe place to be in is having at least one months expenses stashed away. More is obviously better.

-Your social circle is about to turn on its head. You will lose many friends. You'll gain a few new ones. You'll lose some more. Do not be upset or overwhelmed when you find you no longer have a single old friend. (Who knows, maybe this won't happen to you)

Shit is about to get real scary, anon. But step up to the plate. Be present in your life and adapt before you submit.

The question is flawed because in order to become the person you've grown into who is capable of giving out sage advice, you had to make the series of missteps that you did. If you magically alter your life path then you'd just make different mistakes and grow into a different person who would then want to give different advice. It'd be an everlasting cycle. I mean, unless the advice you want to give is "don't strangle that hooker." That'd be just good advice in general.

The earlier, the better. The idea being that most of those kinds of fantasies don't move beyond the honeymoon stage. Yes, you got the girl. Yes, you are happy for now. But six months in, are you still friends? Do you actually work together? What about another year in? Is she still the person you thought she was? Are YOU still the same person you thought you were?

Chasing the dream girl is fun, and a valuable lesson. But the sooner you get that out of the way, the sooner you'll seek out actually meaningful, healthy, and stable relationships.

This is, of course, generalized advice. Some people are with the dream girl for life. It's just that that is a relatively rare case.

And side note, don't let those pills define you, man. Easier said than done, but needing medication is NOT a character flaw.

Save. Money.
Save. Fucking. Money.
Fucking. Save. Money.
Seriously, dude. Don't blow it on stupid shit like partying and booze.

Study your ass off. Whatever your major will be in university, dedicate yourself to your self. TIME MANAGEMENT.

Also, treat yourself with respect. Take care of your body. Exercise. Work out. You don't have to get all Man of Steel and shit, but get a bit of definition and that shit will amp up your confidence like you won't believe!!

Also, learn other shit too. Learn other languages. You can make chicks blush when you say sweet nothings to them in French or Italian. Read, read, read. Culture yourself, join book clubs or online readers' cafes or whatever they're called and get recommendations on awesome books. Things like that.

This is a poignant moment in your adulthood, OP. Plan stuff and have a planner or calendar handy either in your room or via pocket planner. Have a dictionary/thesaurus with you in your backpack. Nowadays it'd be even easier if you have a smartphone, just download a dictionary and thesaurus.

Being an adult means shit happens for real now and it can be scary sometimes. No one ever said it won't be, but it's what you do when shit gets scary and how you react that makes you a real adult.

The world is the world. It's how YOU interact with it. Be courteous. Be grateful. Say thank you. These things really do make a difference.

Oh, and fucking save money.

Taking drugs can be fun and educational, but don't get into a drugs scene. Spending years smoking weed is a complete waste.
Lift weights.
Meditate. If anything, having a functional attention span will put you in the top 10% of people your age.
Videogames are a waste of time.
Don't burn bridges, especially at work
Network.
You get work by fulfilling your employer's needs that they can't meet at the moment. Figure out exactly what your core role is and always make sure that you excel at that - if you are paid for making apple pies, it doesn't matter how good you are at chocolate cakes, you had better focus on the apple pie making.
Porn is not real
Find people - and especially a woman - with strong values
Avoid people who are fuck-ups. Being a fuck-up is contagious.
Being able to plan long-term and delay gratification will be immensely useful in everything you do.
If you are studying, do your homework as soon as you've been given it. Then take any questions to your teacher/prof. This is quicker and far more effective than leaving things to the last minute.

The truth is that physical labor jobs are not sustainable long-term. Your body will eventually break down and then what? Go to school, go to every class, read and do the hw and you will pass. PUSSY IS A DISTRACTION there will never be an abundunce! It's funny now that im older seeing how desperate women get around 23. THIS IS STILL A MANS WORLD. A woman is like a cadilac, an expensive status symbol.

Yes this. And stay social! Whatever you do stay social. Isolation is a deep fucking hole that is soooo hard to crawl back out of.

Ok anon lisent to this very careful, NEVER, I REPEAT NEVER chase a woman, under any circumstance.

Have a partner in live is great but you gotta be careful man, girls tend to change their minds a lot and for them love means a shit. Look for some one that respects you and didint want more than what they give.

Good luck faggot

Hey anon
>yes im talking to you

in this thread I feel a lot of bitterness and regret but just keep pushing never give up

Im gonna post this again cos not many people have seen it:

Im gonna man the fuck up and ace my life learn from my mistakes and make new ones and learn from those too Im gonna be careful with girls and not twist my life around it, however I wont make a change overnight these things come hard and hit hard in the face when you realise you cant complete your new years res for example. You just gave me quite the confidence boost /b/astards, and I want to thank you guys again for being able to learn from your mistakes and furthering me on my path to find myself (which is ultimately my goal whether or not everyone agreed with it in this thread)

Thanks...
--Mike

You should go Navy if you like to travel.

Do you like dick? If so, join the Navy? Lol not the same dude but my grandfather fought in the Navy during the Korean War but I've also got family that were Air Force as well as a Vietnam Vet neighbor that was in the Air Force. I'd say do AF and learn computers and retire as an officer.

I never had any business in there in the first place; I only joined because my parents forced me to (threatened to kick me out of the house before I could graduate HS unless I signed up in 11th grade), and they made sure I had nothing else I could have possibly done (such as college). I just straight up wasn't mentally (or physically) prepared for it.

I've had quite an adventure since though.

To elaborate on the depressed part, I'd add in this: If you're diagnosed with depression, don't let it become you. I think that people who have depression just really enjoy the sympathy they get from telling people they have it. It annoys the fuck out of me.

It all depends anon. Both are better than a master's degree in feminine dance theory. Chances are, the prereqs for both computer network security and business administration are simlilar. Work through your freshman and sophomore level classes, dabble in classes that will count towards both degrees, then decide as you approach your junior year which one is best for you. Based on your ability, interests, the school you want to go to, and what you want from your career
