Go soak it for 10m. Proceed to wash the outer edge.
Take the scoop part of your nail clipper (the skin ny hook thing) then drag it down the side of your toe where it meets the skin.
It will puss up, then pour some hydrogen peroxide in. Repeat a few times till the bacteria stops foaming the peroxide. Pain will be gone for a few hours, do a few more times, and you will be good as new in a few days.

as an experienced nail biter I can personally vouch for fixing your nails yourself with minimal pain and intrusion. You have to let it grow, and remove outgrowths or deformed portions as it grows. my thumbnail got way better over time just by using nail clippers and tweezers. i did have to go through some pain though, with one nail i had to remove a section still attached to the nail bed and that hurt like a complete bitch.
