Irrational fears thread
Ever since I was a child I have been having a very weird fear.Normally I love diving and sea exploration but I shit my pants immediately after I see something manmade in the sea.Shipwrecks, propellers, even the buoy give me the fucking creeps. What is your weird fear /b/?Also does anyone else find the pics I will dump scary?
>>696170086
dude i feel the same!
i feel really unsafe and paranoid when im near such a fucking thing in the boat or in the water
>>696170086
I have it too.
also fuck large underwater rocks and seaweed.
>>696170413
protip: don't search for underwater forests.
>>696170413
HOLY FUCKING SHIT THAT IS SCARY
>>696170486
pic related holy shit.
>>696170534
ocean: not even once.
>>696170086
Yeah I get this as well to some extent.
Seeing man-made things underwater freaks me out a little bit, but only if theyre not meant to be underwater.
Wrecks and shit like that.
Dates back to being freaked out by a documentary about the Titanic when I was a kid, I think
>>696170594
how about whirlpools?
>>696170413
Okay what is that?
BTW My irrational fear is black holes.
>>696170486
welp, turns out it is not only manmade objects for me, this chills me to the bone
how is that irrational? it tells you something went catastrophically wrong for a human vessel that they ended up deep underwater urging you to get away from danger
>>696170086
Im too tired to be scared
>>696170657
this is a real, actual fish.
they sometimes jump on boats and break them, because they're just dumb. they weight hundred of kilograms.
You're not alone bro. Im terrified of the idea of falling to ocean from a cruise ship, holding my breath under water and see that gigantic hull thundering past me and the propeller coming towards... :|
>>696170155
Now I'm gonna have fukking nightmares about this thing
>>696170801
>>696170692
here have another look at underwater forests.
>>696170086
same fear here OP, cant fucking take a dip in the ocean without being paranoid
>>696170830
imaging falling in the ocean that is almost pitch black (at night or something), it's ice cold and you're in the middle of pic related.
fuck the ocean.

I have a fear of standing in front of high power radio dishes. No idea why. Especially since thats what I do for a living. Also being locked inside an industrial dryer while its on and getting shot under a speed boat and getting sliced apart by the prop.
>>696171026
>>696171026
I think theres a movie with this plot...
>>696170086
Things like that don't really scare me, but I'm fucking terrified of open ocean.. any one else ?
>>696171082
>>696170895
u pussy
>>696171123
fuck everything underwater.
>>696170086
I have a really wierd fear of large objects/creatures moving at a really fast speed. It's really hard to find any pics, but one of the best examples are underwater propellers on the ship working at full speed.
>>696171070
Can staying infront of high power dishes actually harm you?sry if dumb question
>>696170086
Holy fuck. You just reminded me of a fear I had since I was little. I still have it, actually. But I moved to Salt Lake City, UT form Germany, where there are no lakes with buoys.
Yeah, I got fucking scared by buoys because of the cable that goes down all the way to the bottom. I can't see the cable, so it scares the shit out of me. I don't know why.
I also used to have this huge fear of pipes. When we lived in Berlin, Germany (which is basically a mega-metropolis) we lived in this apartment complex that had a storage for every apartment in the basement. When we went down to the basement, first of all, you would see these giant black cables all going to the elevator room. Then there were pipes all over the ceiling. I asked my dad: "What are those things at the top of the roof?" And he explained that they're pipes and I asked where they go, and he explained that they go all over the city underground. Scared the shit out of me. I also had nightmares about giant pipes.
Like, even at the public swimming pool, I would be afraid to even look down. I'd be afraid of the drain hole at the center of the pool. I didn't know how far it would go down. I was even afraid imagining that the black lines (lanes) were giant pipes. I would also have a dream about being at such a pool and there would be a giant pipe at the bottom ready to suck me up.
>>696171188
last one and I'm outta here.
I have a question for you though. which would you prefer:
>being dumped in the middle of the atlantic ocean during prehistoric time
or
>being teleported to an alien planet's ocean (the air is breathable and the water is similar earth's)
>>696171240
Yeah, transmission dishes can fry you from the inside out. More especially traditional "Microwave" wavelength dishes

>>696171341
If I choose the 1st option, I'm 100% fucked. If I choose the second one, there is a chance that there are no predators who would try to eat me. 2nd is the best option

I am afraid of insects in generally, but I find butterflies to be the worst. They fly into your personal space - Rude as fuck.
For the record I live in a country completely lacking dangerous insects too, and was not afraid of them as a child, so I don't really know where this fear came from.
>>696170086
Oddly, I don't experience this as fear, per se, but a paralyzing, overwhelming sense of awe.
My weird fear is of becoming possessed.
>>696171308
we have cables like that in the pacific. I scuba dived one. it's pretty terrifying actually, and I don't know why.
>>696171711
Naah i think the plot goes
>bro invites bro out to go swimming in ocean
>just drives off
>couple nights of drifting with the jellies
>>696171308
I use to go diving but T'm also terrified about the buoys cables...
Yeah not just sunk ones though, like a still afloat ship's underside scares me.
I dont mind boarding them and i love swimming but even swimming near docks are abit scary.
What is the name of this phobia?
Same fear. Even after multiple playthroughs, I don't feel comfortable finding that plane underwater in Fallout New Vegas. Once I find it, though, it's not as bad.
>>696170086
I probably have the pussyest fear ever: it's drinking/drunk people. Something about people (and especially women, for some reason) not being to controll their body and act as they want unsettles me very much.
>>696170413
Shit, thats awesome, im from an island started diving really young, 7 or 8, spend whole days diving alone.

I guess it's not as scary if you're the one building it.
But for any passerby it's probably more scary.
I had a fear of sleeping and dreaming last year to the point I'd only fall asleep due to exhaustion from trying to stay awake for too long. I was afraid mainly of the moment when you go from conscious to unconscious as you enter in the "dreamworld". I think I was going insane but eventually I recovered and now I sleep pretty well.
>>696171214
>>696171214
that's not weird so much as practical; nothing really big that moves really fast can possibly be good for a human.
the human brain is at odds with our intelligence a lot of the time (e.g., the human visual system, esp. optical illusions). when you see something that you know must be big (even if it's just a small picture) and is also moving at high velocity, it is entirely normal to find it unnerving. it's why weird ocean shit freaks us out; scale is something to which we're really sensitive because we are capable of intellectualizing our own smallness. not being able to see the bottom, not knowing how far a pipe goes--these are the opposite case, in which we cannot place ourselves due to the unknowns.
if you utterly lack perspective, you might not find these kinds of images off-putting. but you should.

I'm scared shitless of deep water in general. Like, not even of ships or seaweed, or even animals. Just the nothingness and darkness down there. I've heard stories about divers going way too far down and losing their light or having it break entirely and just end up feeling like they're adrift in space with no sense of direction and a limited air supply
>>696170413
What's wrong with you? That looks comfy as fuck. I'd dive there all day.
>>696173034
Wow, this actually makes brilliant sense
>>696170086
I don't know if you're the same one that's been dumping these pics lately but I do like them. The scale in some of them show how tiny we are. Diving like flying a plane or a helocopter is something I may never do so seeing these pics is cool cause I wouldn't normally go looking for them, Can't find the pic I have of toilets dumped at sea but use your imagination.
>>696170086
Here is a strange one.
I'm scared of getting shrunk to the size of a mouse, crawling into a pipe deep underground, and while in the pipe expanding out into my original size, but getting slowly squeezed by the expansion.
Must be something to do with my acute claustrophobia.
>>696173557
>>696173624

I feel bad when I watch this.
I personally have the fear of, when I'm in a really open space or looking directly at the sky, to fall backwards, so basically that gravity reverses and to fall to death.
It may come from the fact that I have vertigo and strongly dislikes the sensation of falling, but still, being a very rational person, and knowing that it just couldn't happen, I fear it.
It's quite a rational fear
There's a lot of ways you can die underwater

>>696174637
I was always to curious to be scared of that type of stuff, it is a little creepy but my curiosity is to strong for me not to look. But as someone who frequently shits, the one thing that scares me alot is when my toilet shakes for no reason, I immediately jump up and freak out for fear that something will jump up my ass
>>696175025
Kinda same here, exept I'm afraid shitless of going out of bounds in any games, like clipping outside the intended area. I always think that developers would hide some npc there to punish you for doing that. Just imagine being chased by something outside the game map.
>>696173557
>filename
Got the exact same problem. I'm a pretty avid scuba diver but seeing stuff in the sea that doesn't "belong there" creeps me the fuck out. From shipwrecks to plastic debri; it makes me feel like impending death.
There are several dive sights with sunk-down buses and benches. Seeing it gives me severe chills.
>>696173959
"FUS"
>>696173034
I don't find any of these things unnerving.. the ocean is beautiful, sunken shit is pure history and pipes and cables that go to the sea floor are about as scary as fluffy white summer clouds... you lot are just strange
>>696175247
Okay, that doesn't sound fun either.
>>696170086
Same.
I think I saw a movie when i was like 6 in about 1982 that went underwater and there were all these mines suspended on chains from the sea floor below, with algea and shit all over them, just these big black spikey balls and chains and slime mold all over everything just hovering there in the green murky space... I didn't know what a mine was, but the deathly reactions of eveyrone on the ship and then showing those things just levitating there, fucking gave me nightmares for years. i dunno if i thought they were monsters or what, but every time I'd go swimming I'd insist on swimming with my eyes open under water. still do to this day. wtf
>>696174693
no anon... that's underwater
>>696174693
Its underwater.
>>696170086
Used to do that for a living when I was a commercial diver. It's actually pretty soothing..... if you're not alone.
When I was roughly 14 - I went diving in shallowish water, no scuba tank, just goggles in the lake.
Maybe 14 feet down. I got down and saw a giant rock, as I moved around it, I saw a fish staring at me. I screamed all the way back to the surface. I collected myself, and dove down to look again. Saw the same fish and screamed again.
That is my underwater story. I have another, but it's not a fear story, just my little step-sister holding my shit by accident in the lake. Same trip too.
>>696174889
Same thing here, I have no idea why my toilet shakes tho. I have made sure it's secure to the ground, there's no leaks so I assume that it is just air bubbles or some shit from the sewer, but idk how and or why it happens

so many human things are designed with a flat, stable foundation in mind. The idea of putting those same things on a platform that can move like in the pic drives me crazy if i think about it to much.
been on these structures many, many times in my life but it still freaks me out if I let the thoughts into my mind.
Google silfra, its an underwater fissure on iceland. The water comes from glaciers and are as clear as air and the fissure itself is more than 100m deep. Imagine snorkeling there at a couple of meters deepth and suddenly you find yourself floating in what looks like nothing, 150m above the bottom with clear sight all the way down! People afraid of heights are known to freak out there.

Sorry for bad english.
I have only one strange fear in my whole life. Since early childrenhood I am afraid of dark pipes like drains, and vents (at the end of air ducts). Nobody knows about that. Now I am adult but this fear is still with me. When I stood in the front of coal boiler (on the roof of power station, I am an engineer) air intake I almost passed out. Fuck this shit. I am the only one around the world with such fear? I never met anyone like me. Hope my english is possible to understand.
>>696179239
And when I was looking for a room to rent most important thing for me was the lack of vents in the walls or ceiling. I know, I'm fucked.

>>696180040
I think maybe autism is the cause
>>696170086
Same here OP im an avid diver but buoys, oil platform scaffolding and large ships i cant go near them just freaks me out although if there is good lighting and the wreck is actually ON the sea floor and I can see the floor it doesnt unsettle me as much.. I know im so broken its hilarious
OP, you should play Bioshock
>>696180040
Rodents, or anything else spying on you in a pipe is pretty rational. I'm afraid of mold and toxins coming out of air vents, so I tape filters over them. It helps my fear a lot.
>>696178924
>>696178584
where it goes tho?
>>696180613

>>696170657

Maybe not irrational but the idea of going about my daily life and suddenly hearing air raid sirens or some sort of like catastrophic emergency signal blairing out scares the fuck out of me.

Theres a Youtube video where they climb down it. Its fucking huge, like the pink slime underground river on Ghostbusters 2, but about 10 times the size.
Fucking heights. Even thinking about it gives me some kind of anxiety.
Also people standing too close to the train tracks. The thought of someone falling and getting all smashed up really freaks me out.

That sounds incredible. I can't imagine life being down there but seeing as how only 10% has been explored who knows what waits to be discovered. The sad part is it probably never will be.

Not an irrational fear. That one you got from millions of years of clueless mammals falling off cliffs to their death before the instinct was ingrained in us all.

yeah - we got to the island in the lake, had to shit.
ask dad, dad says anywhere, tell him it's number 2.
Dad says there is an outhouse in middle of island, follow trail. Get to outhouse, open doors. Spiderwebs everywhere, consider going anyway, look inside toilet, see bones of all foolish enough to attempt shitting in a spider infested outhouse.
Almost in tears, it have to shit so bad, on way back, lightbulb. I am next to a huge toilet. Dad asks if I found it, yep. You go? yep.
Dad can I use the goggles? want to try and find stuff. Sure.
pretend I am looking down for about 100 feet, far enough away that they can't see what I'm doing. pull shorts down, amazed at how hard it is to start shitting in a place you are not supposed to. Shit, is a floater. Assraped for a second before it waterlogs. At this point I notice my little step sis, maybe 11-12 coming out to see what I was doing. Fuck fuck fuck, pull pants up. she asks what im looking at.
'something interesting' - I was so focused on having to shit on the way there, I didn't notice the lake floor was completely sand...except for my shit.
she grabs goggles from me, sees the shit, thinks that's the interesting thing. before I can say no, she dives down, comes back up with it in her hand. Smack it out of her hand and say "that could be poison".
Never told anyone.

Supposedly the sonar they use would be so powerful you could feel it. There is some group that is currently complaining that their sonar is fucking up whales and shit, making them bleed from their eyes. Soo, you couldn't pay me enough to get into the water next to a sub.

Try having a few fire ant colonies in the backyard as well... FML I love the outdoors but I'm not dealing with that shit
>Fucking spicie bois
I think nuclear power plants scare me the most. I live in the Pacific Northwest. All the major plants have all closed down by the 2000s, just scares the shit out of me.
They still have radioactive cores sitting on most of the sites too.
Something that I cannot see or feel, and not knowing if I've been exposed fucking kills me.
I think our common fear is called "Thalassophobia".
Fuck this shit.

I used to have a fear of bees and ironically ended up getting a job as a bee keeper. Bees are actually pretty harmless. Even if they sting you just pull the stinger out right away and it does literally nothing. They usually only sting when they're extremely bothered anyways. Pretty chill insect after all.
>>696186363

I could deal with them in the fall with no leaves but I used to stare out the front window of my work at the horizon..summer time and those green fuckers just plotting my demise.
The weird part is I knew it was completely irrational and fucked
But I just had to look at them to confirm my suspicions and it would literally feel like there was a gun to my head until I looked away.
