When I first became interested in politics as a child, I was able to realize at a young age that comparing any person or group to Adolf Hitler and/or the Nazi Regime was unjust. Comparing one’s political opponent to arguably the most notorious war criminal in human history undermines who Hitler and the entire Nazi Regime were and the crimes for which they are responsible. This prevents people from taking one of the darkest eras of history as seriously as we should, and is disrespectful to both Holocaust victims and survivors. I was in elementary school when I first saw demonstrators comparing President George W. Bush to Hitler, then in High School when I saw others compare President Obama to Hitler. I’ve always maintained that “playing the Nazi card” is wrong.
Now, Donald Trump is running for President of the United States, and appears to be trying his absolute hardest to prove me wrong. The proposal to require American Muslims to wear identification badges has become one item on a very long list of repugnant statements. Trump is a militaristic fascist who fills the vacuum of coherent policy proposals with appeals to white Aryan nationalist pride and panders to xenophobia. The similarities in the rhetoric are very difficult to ignore.
The obvious response to this is thus: Adolf Hitler is a war criminal directly responsible for the deaths of approximately 11 million people. Donald Trump has committed no such crimes. Therefore comparisons to Hitler are still unwarranted. It is true that Trump is not a war criminal. However, he has openly and proudly declared his intention to commit war crimes if elected. He loudly proclaims the necessity of using the United States military to target and kill civilian non-combatants. He openly expresses approval for the war crimes of Saddam Hussein. His supports greet these statements with nodding approval and thunderous applause rather than gasps of horror.

This is to say that Trump’s 2016 Presidential campaign may be the only point in American history when comparisons to Hitler are not terribly farfetched. However, I do not believe that Trump is deliberately trying to channel Hitler. It is more likely that Trump is not a very intelligent person and doesn’t understand much about the world outside of his high-rise. One reason I would not compare Trump to Hitler is because Hitler was notoriously intelligent and charismatic, whereas Trump is neither. Hitler was diabolical, Trump is just very stupid.
