Foundation, Foundation and Empire and Second Foundation are really good.
I'm going to recommend some space opera(that mass effect apparently ripped most of the plot from).

I think I saw this suggested somewhere, I might give it a go

Master and Margarita is the best book I've ever read, if you read it follow along with the footnotes.
I got a bit carried away, but that's a good primer on Russian Literature,
>>695471373
Yay I'm a subset! I find it interesting how she writes fluently about humans emotions especially dealing with a lack of belonging and also produces the most realistic imaginations of space battles that I believe exist today.
>>695471954
For a pink mohawk flavor, instead of Neuromancer's black trenchcoat, try Snow Crash. It's still cyberpunk, but taken to the other extreme.
>>695472305
I just like her weird aliens.
Fuck it, i'm just going to post the NPR guide. Its a bit dated, and there are some questionable choices, but its mostly alright.
I've never heard of anybody else reading this book series, online or irl
>>695471766
harry potter??? fucking lol fuck off
Apparently Disney approved added Thrawn to the official Star Wars universe.
Not going to be the same as Zahn's amazing trilogy, but with Zahn writing the content for the new character, I expect great things.
This was my favorite of the star wars books, although the bounty hunter tales was close second.
Disney needs to make some bounty hunter themed films
>>695472490

>>695472765
Right now he's just in the Rebels cartoon series.
I'd love to see him make it into the movies.
>>695473054
I need to reread it several times.
It is akin to The Bible for Middle Earth.
For anyone that read the bible, there are so many names and places that they lose meaning. Same with The Silmarilion.
Fenor and feonor and femir and feomir and so on...
On that note, Children of Hurin is a pretty sad Tolkien novel. Not every ending is happy in that world.
>>695473274
another good series here...
My absolute favorite
>>695471425
King James, the guy who literally commissioned the King James Bible (duh), was openly homosexual. How's that shit for ya?

I'm not sure god tier but I finished reading The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes. Very detailed account of the discoveries in physics leading up to the first experiments that proved fission chain reaction was possible, the Manhattan project, and the eventual use of the bombs in Japan.
>>695473197
That is probably the 5 or 6th different book i've posted in this thread.
It is good, but certainly not the best book of all time.
Much better than that Yuuzan Vong bullshit or those horrid prequels.
>>695473573
has nothing to do with that book being objectively a god tier book.
>>695473472
and of course, the Martian. Really is a great book. I read it first, then the audio book. Audio book performance was wonderful.
read it twice

I think there have been talks about doing a boba fett movie, also I think they are supposed to do a han solo origin movie.
>>695471929
Good book but i don't like Ellroy's use of real world people as fictional characters so much.
>>695469121
Just as shitty as twilight. The main character barely does anything for himself. Success through social relevance. That's why the world is the way it is.
>>695473240
Especially in the longer novels, Crime and Punishment, Anna Karenina, etc.
It helps to know how Russian names work, but the nickname system just fucks everything up unless you have a native speaker or teacher helping you through it. My Russian Lit teacher made us keep a character list for every book we read.
More weird aliens.
Battle Royale
Can't believe it hasn't been mentioned yet

With Rogue One coming out, they might start picking all sorts of times and plots within the greater universe.
I do hope they omit everything from the prequels. Pretend it didn't happen and make up their own new ideas.
>>695473905
The area 51 series was also pretty entertaining. The early books have a lot of actual historical references which are worked into the narrative, which makes it more interesting if you like history at all.
did anyone else really enjoy the halo books?
>>695473918
Good choice.
Even more weird aliens.
I really love all of these bizarre cover art choices on the older editions.
I read this book for school, but is easily my favorite book after reading it.
>>695469129
My man, anything bukowski is amazing.
Takashi Kovcas first book
>>695473905
I loved the book, and found the film to be almost on par.
They stuck pretty well to the science and plot. Often times Hollywood will throw in aliens and explosions and butcher the plot, but not that time.
>>695473903
I never commented on the tier of the book. If reading that shit gets you hard, good for you. Just throwing in a fact i thought was interesting.
>>695473725
Watched it when it came out. It's pretty good, but quite a bit more different from the book.
>>695474254
>We will see you in 2-3 weeks. God's speed.

>>695474411
That is a great book. Classic sci-fi
>>695474585
Well that might be a good thing then, I'll have to check it out
What with the cyberpunk in the thread, I'm going to suggest Netrunner, if you like card/board games. Captures the feel perfectly. Solid game too.
>>695474037
>My Russian Lit teacher made us keep a character list for every book we read.
Yeah that's a good idea with Dostoevsky. He refers to his characters by at least three names interchangeably; first name, last name, shortened first name or nickname.
>>695468652
yeah, having no ftl drive makes for some interesting stories like in enders game or xenophobia
>>695475121
That particular universe cheats it a little though, they do kind of have a plot device that I don't want to spoil for the people who haven't read the books.
>>695474585
it will be interesting to see what they do in the future seasons since it got to the end of the book
>>695475121
You might like the C.J.Cherry books too then.
This shit right here. Logan nine fingers is my favorite protagonist of all time
>>695475121
speaking of which, A Fire Upon The Deep by Vernor Vinge. It has FTL in spots, but the book has a universe where it is only possible in a particular part of the galaxy. This is one of my favorite sci-fi books and I'm generally not a fan of fiction at all.

>Space Opera with no FTL is really cool.
I've really been enjoying the Expanse series on Scifi which is basically a space opera or political thriller confined to our solar system.
I've heard the books are excellent; but I enjoyed the show so much that I'm conflicted whether I should read them and spoil the show.
>>695476108
This looks pretty interesting
>>695473172
Was great, but try anathem. Probably the best book I have read in years, and quite a technical achievement

>>695475095
It can be even more complicated than that, even.
First name, Patronymic (from the father's name), and last name, and then a bunch of nicknames based on how close you are to a person and the formality of the occasion.
An example, from Chekov's Seagull: the main character's full name is Constatin Gavrilovich (son of Gavril or whatever) Treplev, and his most used nickname in the play is Kostya, which his mother uses to subtly demean him or guilt him, and people also call him by his last name semi-informally, by his first and patronymic in a conversation if they had just met, and by just his first name, also in semi-informal conversation.
I'm pretty sure he only gets one nickname in the play, but in some books people get multiple and it actually has something to with the story.
>>695476774
No fucking kidding. When nothing happens for three hundred pages, you really notice how Niven cannot write interesting characters to save his life.
>>695476776

I think that Idris Elba would totally own the role of Roland. It does seem like the kind of character he was born to play.
I would hope that this is a case of making changes for the sake of the actor, and not for cheap PC points.

I meant in terms of character, demeanor, and the like.
If you want to still have Detta, you can have her call Elba a race traitor, Uncle Tom and the like.
We also don't know if a sequel is getting made or not. it's contingent on the sucess of the first movie.
