Start writing up a budget plan; 500m is more money than I've ever even considered being in possession of! I guess the first step would be getting my personal life set up, but that would just be rent on a decent apartment in NW Washington, DC, and expenses. I can't imagine going over 4K per month on that, so we'll say 20 years x 12 months puts us at a nice 96K for important "week-to-week survival" ($499m left)
Then I would go for the long-term sustainability investments; certified deposits, low-interest savings plans, stocks, etc. so probably put about 100k into that. Even if my return is only like .4% per year or less, that's still 4K sneaking back every 12 months, an more over time if it's handled correctly. I don't want to get too much tied up in there, though. I know how it is like to have absolutely nothing.
So I would spend my money to a couple of bigtime projects (cars, self designed house, etc) and a few employees like a cook, a barber, someone for messages and thats just it.
