Yeah I realise I'm pretty lucky when I hear stories like this.
Did you not have the grades or money to do either? I don't really want to help people or deal with patients. My friend wanted to do medicine together but I changed my mind at the last minute. Still feel bad about it. He'll be stuck working in the same hospital for years now. Hopefully he'll get his freedom one day.
I've always wanted to study the brain since I started uni. My master's thesis was a piece of research on the mechanisms of aging that underlie Alzheimer's disease. I wanted to continue with that but I've decided to try and go towards cognitive neuroscience instead. Currently I study brain tumours (plus central nervous system growth and repair in general) so it gives me a lot of flexibility for the future since I can always go into cancer research if I don't get to do exactly what I want. People really want cancer researchers.

"Medicine" is studying to be a medical doctor. I believe you're thinking of pharmacology.
But the brain is so incredibly complex but poorly understood. It's everything that makes you who you are. I'd actually say cancer is rather dull in comparison since all it is, regardless of all the ways that it can occur, is the failure of cell cycle regulation leading to unchecked proliferation.
