Some things I believe to help at least a little are their ability to eat pretty much anything (as a side-effect of being designed to eat anything that humans and horses eat already) and that their unique physiology makes them resistant to common diseases, but there's inevitably a point where you'll just have to give realism some slack in order to have ferals running around.

Generally, their survivability is pinned down to any combination of:
