CARB program pretty much fucked open trail riding though so a lot of the local spots I used to ride as a kid are fenced off these days. Don't fall for the ninja 250. You will get bored of it and you will always be fixing a piece of shit that was trashed by its previous owner. Get any standard detuned v-twin 600cc opposed to an i4 or triple. They don't have the torque to loop you as easily if you get throttle happy. SV650, Ninja 650, FZ-07 are the sportier bikes but you could get something more like an adventure bike such as an NC700X or even an enduro DR650

I had one when I was 16. It was my first road bike after riding dirt since I was 5. They're good enough bikes that even veterans enjoy them. You can learn on it, and won't get bored within a month. They have HUGE aftermarket as well, and sound great.
Put a GSXR front end a zx10 rear spring on and it will handle much better, but as a noob you probably won't notice. Buy one wtih those done if possible.
Best part of SVs is that you can sell it for what you bought it for.

Not as fun to me. I have as much land as I want to ride on because i live in the NJ pine barrens with hundreds or even thousands of miles of trails, tracks, and gravel pits to ride in just out my back yard. I love being in the woods and nature. To be able to stop for a break during a hard ride and turn off the bike to hear nothing but the wind in the trees and the birds chirping is something that I really enjoy and it's something that a street bike just can't offer me. I love the dirt riding community and I have lots of friends to go with. So right now for me, street bikes are just a different pace than what I'm used to and I like. So that's why I stick to the woods.
