I wouldn't say they're pointless. Gender is all around us, and shapes basically everything we do as human beings. What we wear, how we carry ourselves, how we are expected to behave, what jobs we're supposed to have, etc etc etc. This is why I can't understand people who say gender isn't socially constructed, it obviously is. There's an abstract concept of "male" and "female" that we construct.
Also important is dysphoria. People may feel the gender assigned to them by society is incorrect, causing great anxiety and distress. There was actually a study where it was found the brains of people with gender dysphoria actually operate more like those of the gender they identify as.
So, it's important for them to see themselves as that other gender, and for others to recognize it. I hope I kind of addressed what you're saying. Yes, in a perfect world we would have no labels, but our society is so deeply gendered it doesn't work like that.
