A gun is literally only remotely dangerous when there is a round in the chamber. Even then, you need to pull the trigger to make the unsafety relevant, and then it's only unsafe in the direction you're pointing.
You can't make a knife not sharp when you're not using it, and you tend to use the sharp bit more closely to your fingers when cutting vegetables or some shit anyway.
That's not to say I'm not hilariously clumsy but there's a logic here.
