I also take the time to hit the range and run carry drills. I can be out, on target, and first shot fired and center mass in under 0.5 sec. if you get shot with anything its going to put you down. yeah a .40 is effective but so is a +P+ 9mm. you're also looking at double or more than double the rounds in a magazine compared to a .45. i'd rather have 17 rounds in a glock than 7 in a 1911.
on top of that, since you're firing a lighter bullet there's less recoil. that's less time to get back on target.
it comes down to preference more than anything, but i'd rather have more ammunition to throw downrange than increased stopping power. if i hit you with one or two shots with anything, you're going to be reeling.
