I avtually have an elaborate suicide fantasy that I'll think about before going to sleep. In short, I'd shave part of my head, start a fire and use my hair in it to make the burnt hair smell, make incisions on my thighs and rub salt in them, burn my arms (not my hands) and cut my chest multiple times. After that I'd make an exit bag and sit in agony until I die. Comfy is definitely the word I'd use.

Sometimes if I'm not feeling the ideation but still can't clear my mind to go to sleep I run through like, a brain wash. I imagine my skull with metal latches and someone undoes the latches, popping the top of my skull off. All the bad thoughts, memories and emotions are represented as a black sludge in my skull. The guy washes out the interior of my skull cap, then pops my brain out and sets it on a table, before plugging a small circuit board into my spinal column that will regulate my breathing and heartbeat. He then scrubs off my brain, power washes the base of my skull, then puts everything back together.
Another is imagining a Rod From God weapon, pic related, up in space. Orienting itself to get on target, launching a dart, following the path as it hurtles through the upper atmosphere, passing through clouds, approaching my city, my neighborhood, my house, my roof. Then slowing everything down to a crawl as the white-hot tip impacts my roof, splitting and vaporizing the shingles and wood, shockwaves and heat spreading through the house, smashing windows. Slowly down the dart proceeds, until it smashes through my bedroom ceiling and creeps toward my head as I sleep. Impacting my temple, sending spiderweb cracks across my skull, moments before the pressure blows out my eyes and pops my skull like a superheated egg. Then everything comes back to full speed, levelling the neighborhood in an instant

Very rarely have I encountered issues unique to my network installation. WORST shit I ever had to deal with was a corruption of the cluster database that manages Windows Print Server. Didn't know there was even a sub database (outside the printers one) for that shit and since it's SYSTEM owned/written DB file, it's always in use so the system denies my Enterprise backup software the right to back it up EVERY time (in a way the backup software doesn't see it as a missed file and reports it got everything!)

Oh believe me, I'm working to get a SysAdmin position myself. Haven't even started a low-level position yet, but I figure once I get hired at the airline my father works at I'll move up after a year or two if I can stomach it.
I used to constantly stress over whether or not I knew enough to enter the industry, even though computers have always been my passion. Whenever that problem crops up, I call up my parents and boringly discuss tech topics way beyond the scope of their understanding. I listen to them confusingly compare it to "hey my mouse is acting funny" and feel confident in my job security and knowledge.

Mah nigga.
It gets to the point you can't even dumb yourself down enough to communicate the most basic things to your friends and family. Shit sux, man. Luckily I have AMAZING coworkers who are just as smart and nerdy as me and they've become my best friends. There's a woman in her early 50s who has been in IT literally since the beginning. She worked with her father on the hardwired panel boards in NASA space shuttles in the 70s. She was there for punchcards and telecom and coax Interconnected networks and ALL of it. I really strive to be like her at that age--just this godlike computer guru--master of databases.
I do HEAVILY recommend getting familiar with basic relational databases though, if you haven't already. SQL is a golden ticket in IT, and unfortunately I can tell you from experience that book learning and certification paths are poorly equipped to prepare you for the enterprise. You should take CompTIA's Server+ and Security+ for a much better grounding in our field's basics.

Thanks for the advice! I actually haven't been to sure on how to advance my education beyond the scope of the desktop computer/etc. I can rip one apart, fix a problem, and reassemble it within an hour. That's plus jury-rigging with poorfag solutions that take awhile to get working. I can basically coast through basic certifications once I am ready to enter that work field.
The best part is, I'm at the point where I'm starting to break down the primary levels of how hardware works. I'm heavily interested in stuff like GPU architecture and the electrical engineering that goes into making any kind of PCB boards. Would pursuing that interest help me out in any way? I strive to be a SysAdmin, and will make the cut one way or another if I have anything to do about it, but I feel like my calling might be more for "professional-grade repairman for unique and special situations".

Here's advice from the son of a mechanic; Buy a decade-old car (one that's been vetted as a "good and worth it" vehicle, such as a Ford Ranger), pay for the transmission to be rebuilt+anything else wrong with it. As long as you don't purchase a lemon, you can easily trade up a shitty never-ending car payment for an upfront "refurbished" cost of a used vehicle. Make sure to get the work done by a reputable and long-standing business too.

Indians in Peru still call Brugmansia sanguinea by the name Huaca or Huacachaca (“plant of the tomb”) form the belief that it reveals treasures anciently buried in graves”

Hardware wise, get the latest copy of "Upgrading and Repairing PCs" and that's MORE than enough.
SysAdmins don't get into the knitty gritty--those days are past. If a part is failing or jeopardizing the mission, you replace it. That's all.
Knowing the I/O of processors and shit is useful in a rudimentary sense but it's outside the scope of SysAdmins. Get familiar with server OSs, the various major services (standard MS Server MCSA/E books take care of most of this) and Powershell/CMD scripting, as well as the basics of networking (IOS, cables/connections (Ethernet(STP), iSCSI, Fiber), switches, subnetting and VLANs). I can tell you that in today's world, being able to spot networking problems will save you a LOT of time and frustration, as firewalls, IPS and other security crap will be the problem 8 times out of 10 when troubleshooting "mystery issues".
You really need to make the jump to server stuff though. Right now you're a Desktop Support guy. SysAdmin typically don't handle simple workstation fixes.

>>691402287
29. Not as sad as it sounds. I like financial security. I've got a nice house, I like having the free cash to work on it, I like saving for retirement and some nice toys along the way. Dropping a shitty monthly finance payment is one way to reallocate my earnings to things that are important to me at this stage in my life. Having a new luxury vehicle doesn't matter to me like it did when I was 24
>>691401535
The (mostly) new terminology you've used has excited me. I've wanted to amass a collection of books that can help advance my education, but I've always assumed they're outdated within a year, three years at most. That's the reason I've used the internet 99% of the time to teach myself everything I've needed to know, is that possible?
The world of scripting is scary to myself too, honestly, simply because of the perspective I have on it. Since I've worked with hardware and understanding computing in a yes/no, in/out, on/off type of mindset for the longest time, bringing words into the picture just confuses me further simply because of this. I understand how most programming environments and compilers function, but the confusion remains. Any way to overcome this confusion?

Computers get new technology regularly, but it's important to understand why we call older stuff 'Legacy'. Understanding HOW the protocols and technologies work will rarely get outdated, just adapted or upgraded with newer features. Once you learn fundamentals like services, networking, clustering, etc. from ANY source, they will be relevant for a LONG time. Don't get discouraged.
If you want servers to be your pathway, Start with CompTIA Server+ and Security+ guides, like I said. Move from there to the MCSA suite for 2012/R2. At that point, you'll know whether this is the career for you or you want to switch back to desktop support/electrical engineering or something.
The Internet is an invaluable tool in many ways, just know that even in the IT/help world, it DOES contain misdirection that can mess you up if you incorporate it into your early learning. It's best used for direct questions you have from book learning.
For scripting trust TechNet (Microsoft's explanation of their cmdlets and commands) and Stack Overflow. All a script is is the things you type into the command line or powershell arranged to execute in specific order. Go through the 40-some odd CMD tools and try them out on a computer until you get the hang of them. Then move on to powershell. These will be invaluable for getting the hang of how coding works too.
(Download a free virtual machine system to crank out disposable computers you can fuck up and fix too--VirtualBox is an OK start and it's really easy to get the hang of).

The information you're giving me is absolutely excellent, but I do have a specific question on how to "learn" the fundamentals of working with server-side hardware.
This is probably going to sound vague, but I've heard getting Cisco's CCNA is a surefire way to make your resume look good. I've looked into studying for it and acquiring the certification itself, but it seemed like it was trying to teach the fundamentals of networking on a much broader scope and in a way that wasn't compatible with my "way" of learning, more or less.
Since you've mentioned basically messing around with virtual machines to find out how stuff works, I can learn most fundamentals and information in a very "hey, whats this do?" type of learning? Because I've figured out, that's the way I learned literally everything I did about hardware, and it's the only learning style I have. I like to be given every tool upfront, and cautiously venture farther with them over time. Is this possible, and is it a good way to learn the fundamentals of networking and server-side software and data management?

Idk why but I laughed way too hard at this

Not who you've been talking with, but it seems we're on nearly the same course.
Just over a year running all of the IT infrastructure for some grade schools. Looking to start studying for the CCNA exam myself.
Just wanted to say good luck anon!

You cease to exist. The human mind, personality, memories, etc. are all kept in the form of electrical connections in the brain.
In essence, we ARE our brains. This is never more evident than watching someone who survived terrible head injuries whose personalities completely change.
When all electrical activity ceases in the brain, everything you are, were or ever would be is irreplaceably gone in the blink of an eye.

Good luck to you too anon!

Cisco CCNA is networking. You learn routers, switches, IOS, ports, VLANs, subnetting, etc. You see, the devices that connect computers to their enterprise networks are computers themselves and they are "set" with codes that allow or deny one connected device to communicate with another one. It has nothing to do with servers but yes, it's very sexy on a resume IN ADDITION to server knowledge/certs.
Networking is essentially related to server operation and services but it's its own entire field. CISCO is also merciless about making you have a lot of knowledge beforehand.
If you want the basics of networking that can build into CISCO, I recommend the Microsoft MCSA coursepath--three books (or one giant one) will teach you a lot--particularly the Networking Infrastructure portion in the 70-411 one.
The CompTIA certs I stressed will help you a little bit as well.
>is using VMs a good way to learn server stuff
YES.
If you buy the MCSA books, most of them will come with trial versions of the server OS that allow you to run the real deal for 120 days. Set it up on VMs. Create yourself a Domain Controller and a couple of servers and set them up in a network. Break shit and fix it. It's a great way to learn.

Thanks! I think I've got enough information to form my path from here. You've been a great help and an inspiration to me! I'm gonna go get started on reading up on everything you've told me about.

Good luck, Anon. May you join the elite among us. The world always needs more Server Admins.

Addendum to my own post; I've had a love of computers since I was 10 years old, been taking them apart since 12, and have wanted to be a SysAdmin since I was 13. I'm 17 now (shh) and have lately been stressing out about how I'm going to make it and support myself, etc, in the future. All thanks to this anon, I now know what I need to make it and get my dream job. Now, just to brush up my high school education and get to hard work at what I need.

To think it started with a cynical post I made about googling computer shit. THIS is why after 11 years on the site I still come to lurk /b/. Interactions like this one make having to wade through chest-deep shit all worth it in the end.
