Aquarium, stand, and custom sump. Project is on hold until I can find a way to cut smooth straight lines in the back of the display tank. Can't find a tool capable of that yet.
>>
>>690754680
Did you try a router?
>>
>>690754786
When I tried a router on scrap acrylic, the cuts were rough. Kept shooting out searing hot balls of plastic too. It was a weak $20 harbor freight router though

kek
>>
>>690754955
use a jigsaw (reciprocating saw) to make the cuts and smooth with a belt sander and then by hand with fine sandpaper
>>
>>690755388
The cuts have to be made an inch below the top rim. If you know anything about aquariums, it's meant to serve as a coast to coast overflow into an overflow box, which in turn is plumbed directly into the sump. So there will be two 12" long lines about 1/8th to 3/16th inches thick. I haven't tried a jigsaw yet though

The vibes are connected to the audio circuit in such a way that turning the gain up for an individual channel increases the speed of its associated vibe. It's not meant to be used on a person. It's just for show. The vibes are spaced in such a way that you'd need some horribly disfigured anatomy to use them internally.

Where are you that they're overpriced? I live in San Diego and got a custom 35 gal round-edged acrylic and custom sump for under 200 bucks. I had to build the stand myself like you did, but that part was easy. Granted, hobby aquariums are still really popular here and that means there's lots of competition and lots of people that can make tanks.
>>

>>690760770
If you can find someone with a machine big enough to handle your part and the part doesn't crack from the vibration sure. Normally I cut flat sheets with a waste board underneath. The trick is balancing the cutting speed and RPM to avoid heat that will melt the acrylic. Using an acrylic friendly cutting fluid to disperse some of the heat will help too, even just an air blower (which is all I use) works.

Lowes doesn't cut acrylic, and even if they did, do you trust that person to do that? You're building an aquarium...the cuts need to be precise. The strength and integrity of the acrylic needs to be preserved during the cutting process, or it's going to craze after a few years, and split.

>>
>>690761543
Yes they do, I've been working in a sheet metal fabrication shop since I was 16 (22 now) frequently have to go to get misc pieces cut for odd projects.
And considering it's their job, if they fuck it up they have to do it until it's right so not really a matter of trust because it will be right eventually.
>>
>>690761779
Cell cast acrylic. Aquariums need a very specific type. Lowes may cut the cheap stuff they sell in their store, but they won't cut cell cast. Trust me, I've asked.
>>
>>690756138
Who are you trying to kid, literally nobody uses a jigsaw correctly more than twice in their life span.
>>
>>690754680
Jigsaw with a fine tooth blade meant for metal on low speed. Use a guide if the cuts are long and/or critical. 600 to 800 wet sandpaper to finish, and if you are fancy, flame the edges.

Silly question... why do you need to cut straight lines on the back of a tank?
>>
>>690761779
Hey I'm not the guy you were talking to, but both lowes and home depot here in san diego wont cut acrylic for you, so it's possible that the other gentleman doesn't get that kind of service in Indiana either. On top of that, at 22 if you think you have the experience to tell someone what they should be doing, you need a slap upside the head and a reality check.
>>
>>690761774

I know a thing or two about aquariums, and this is a bad idea. The long cuts along the side weaken the structure, and you don't want that. It also has to have a catch basin to direct the water to the sump, which probably will be PVC pipe or maybe vinyl tubing.

Save yourself the headache and make a round hole on the back, fit a bulkhead and plumb from there to the sump, and put a 90 degree fitting inside, trimmed to the level you want the water at.

Problem solved, acrylic tank not wrecked, no need for long straight cuts in the tank.
>>
>>690761953
Coast to coast overflow. There will be an overflow box attached to the back of the tank, those lines will be the exit point where the tank water leaves the tank, and goes to the sump to be filtered.

>>
>>690762084
Awesome, man. Fluidized filters are really cool, I used a DIY one for years in my planted tank. My planted tank is a vertical column freshwater tropical 28 gal with an emphasis on river emulation, so I have a lot of flow on one side and 2 or three dead zones. I don't use a sump for that one because I hid my equipment behind large wood display pieces and plants.

My marine tank is the giant asshole with the sump though, I actually just swapped out an entire tray for K1 filter media the other day and I'm watching it like a hawk because I had to do a full pull of the tray and couldn't leave any of original pieces of media in there to promote healthy bacteria growth again. I'm scared for my LPS lol.
>>
>>690762275
I was concerned about bowing too. I was thinking that since I would be chemically welding the overflow box basically around the cuts, the overflow box welds (overflow box is made of the same thickness of the tank acrylic) would end up serving as bracing itself. I was going to do a beananimal overflow system.

HAHAHAHAHA

boyo, I'm an ME that passed the PE exam 2 years ago, I GUARANTEE you don't make more than me (also it's the internet, so that's completely irrelevant). Fabrication was like.....my first year of college. Anything you can do in your shop I can do with my eyes closed.

The reason you need a slap upside the head is because you're 22 and think you know better about a hobby you not only don't partake in, but the other person has devoted hours to literally crafting with their own hands. That would be like a software engineer coming into your workshop and telling you how to bend and route conduit.

In short, you're a moron, but we already knew that with the whole, "I'm 22 and you're doing it wrong" thing.

>Indiana. A tank like mine (around 40 gallons) along with the overflow box would cost about 500+ from a more popular online store. I've spent a fraction of that so far.

"so far", and so far, no water, no fish, no tank. So, basically, dead money.

Besides, a 500 plus acrylic tank would be at least 75 gal, and would be drilled to plumb. Google is your friend.

yeah they can be a little noisy, though no more so than having a small air pump constantly running. The rattling from the media bouncing around can get a little annoying if it's housed in something with thin walls our your sump cabinet doesn't have doors, but it honestly never bothered me. In my experience, protein skimmers are the noisy assholes of the aquarium world.

Then again my protein skimmer was basically a DIY fluidized filter with a DIY skimmer atop...

>Lowes doesn't cut acrylic, and even if they did, do you trust that person to do that? You're building an aquarium...the cuts need to be precise. The strength and integrity of the acrylic needs to be preserved during the cutting process, or it's going to craze after a few years, and split.

Acrylic will craze regardless. Acrylic doesn't split. You don't need super precision to make a tank, 1/32" will do.

Lowes does not cut acrylic, so you got that one right.

Make sure your frames are in pretty good condition before you buy, you can waste a lot of time having to fix frames, time is money you don't get back. Try to keep padding as intact as possible. That way you can reuse a lot of stuff. If you find that the urethane foam in what you have has lost support, instead of replacing, you can quite often steam it back to life. Purchasing a decent garment steamer (even a portable one) can save you money down the line because you buy less foam. You can buy fabric cheap when you buy ends of rolls. Last few yards on a roll aren't worth much to a fabric stores because people want to do larger jobs, often 3 or 4 yards is enough to do an armchair, more if it has loose cushions etc. Good luck anon.
