Here's the deal as of now. We have 2 private organizations pretending to be interested in our wellbeing. They do this every few years because that's their job - getting elected. No one's job is to govern. No one's job is to legislate with reason and sanity. No one's job is to bring factuality and practicality to the public issues we face.

On average only around 30% of the population actually votes, and of that 30% maybe 1/3 are Democrats, 1/3 are Republicans and the final and most important 1/3 are undecided voters.
2/3 of the active voter base of this country are highly partisan and when push comes to shove they will back up their party nominee.
Also, most of the people you hear talking about how bad either candidate is are most likely not going to even vote in the general election. So take that with a grain of sand.
What it comes down to at the end of the day is securing as much of the 1/3rd undecided voter base in swing states. This is why if you live in a state like California you don't see any attack ads or telephone/door-to-door voting solicitors. California is a blue state and it is 99.99% likely that the electoral votes for the state will go to the democrats. Iowa is a different story, they harass you and blast you with ads and nonstop bullshit in an attempt to rally as many voters to the polls because only in these states do the votes of average citizens actually count for anything.
Blah blah blah it's all a bunch of bullshit anyways and this is why so few people vote because they either incorrectly think it's rigged OR they correctly think that their votes don't count.. at least so long as you live in 43 of the uncontested states.
Here's a tip: If you don't live in Ohio, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, Virginia, or Florida then don't even bother voting for POTUS. Instead you ought to focus on your state, county and local city politics where, if you live in California, your vote actually counts.
