That's alright, I'll try my best, then, to get the thoughts out here as coherently as I can.
So, to start: it's not necessarily a bad thing to dabble with genres--it gives you a taste of what you like and dislike, and you eventually learn the rules and tones of each genre that work best with each given subject. So don't see it as "my work is suffering for my not finding a theme and sticking to it"-- it's all a work in progress.
Going off that point, it isn't a bad thing either to have a light comedy featuring characters with heavy backstories--you can do it, it just takes smart execution and well-informed decisions in the writing process. Super serious OCs can be funny if they're out of their element: so in Skittles and Jessica's cases, maybe they're struggling to adapt to civilian life, maybe they get into a predicament which gets blown out of proportion due to their incompetence when it comes to handling things delicately. There are a myriad of paths your story can take--you just need to think it through.
