First of all. I have to ask how much you actually shoot. Guns are not like movies, most people that buy for defense are not the best shot, shooting someone in the knee is difficult and can still kill them if you hit an artery. All long guns are shit for defense in my opinion, horrid idea to use it for home defense. Tasers can also kill.
That aside, what if the person attacking you is on drugs? It's well known that when people are on drugs that they sometimes become unable to feel pain, and will continue attacking until their body is physically incapable.

I own guns, and my wife has been taught how to use them. I'm a federal law enforcement officer, and if I'm going to keep killing tools in the house for protection, my family will know how to tactically clear a room, use tactical lighting techniques and be able to handle their weapon. .223 isn't made to kill so much as it's made to give a soldier low recoil and a lot of bullets in a magazine to accurately shoot in the direction of the enemy to keep them suppressed, the infantry tactics are more concerned with keeping the enemy's heads down than actually killing with bullets. However lets talk about the box style internal magazines. Every single one of them can be loaded with stripper clips. I own an SKS and a Mosin.
