I normally tip fat when eating at a restaurant, but the one thing I don't like is when I get take-out from a chain restaurant and they will have the tip line on the reciept. If you're genuinely nice and work hard, or if (like most places I go to) they're a regular server or bartender I typically tip $10. Generally my meals or drinks hover around $30-$40 dollars so when I go out I assume to spend $40-$50 total. Obviously I'll tip more if If with someone and our food costs more.

Here are some handy ‘tips’ that you can use to not pay someone extra for just doing their job.
When on a date:
You’ll need a credit card for this one. When the bill comes they always give you two receipts, the store copy and your copy. On your copy write in a big tip in full view of your date; I like to do 50-90% for effect. You can play it up “What’s a good tip? $40?”. Now, here’s where you need to do a little slight of hand. On the store copy write the word CASH in the tip line as if you left a cash tip. This way, you also fuck with the waiter, who wonders if someone stole the cash you supposedly left for him. This has the added bonus of creating mistrust among the waitstaff and could lead to violence. Add to that, no waiter will post your receipt online to shame you, because it indicates that a tip was left. finally when leaving, feign forgetting something at the table and pull the old switch-a-roo.
When at a bar:
Here’s a great way to get excellent service and strong drinks all night long… Bring a lot of small denomination bills, $5s and $10s. The trick here is to pay after every serving and get back some ones. Leave those ones on the bar, not so far out that the bartender would be bold enough to take them, but far enough that there is no doubt that you are leaving them as a tip. As the night goes on and that stack grows, you’ll see your service and the quality of your drinks increase. At the end of the night simply pick up your change and leave.

Guesstimate on the cost of the meal before you go. Get a Visa prepaid card with just a few dollars over the expected value. When it comes time to tip be super generous. When you are billed out the tip isn't run through until the end of the shift. Servers fall under a different category for minimum wage in America. The server minimum wage is 2.13/hr in most states, while some are 2.43/hr. This is for a couple of reasons, but here is the main one. Americans are so accustomed to eating for dirt cheap, ex: McDonalds, Burger King, etc. They do not want to pay more for better food because they are ignorant. Therefore, restaurants have to keep their prices competitive, meaning they cannot afford to pay servers a lot of money. Because tipping is commonplace in American society, they use that as a foothold to get away with not paying as much.
The reason servers agree to this is actually quite reasonable. They have no other choice. Jobs that have steady pay of a decent rate usually require experience/education, while most servers are in school or have lives that cannot afford to go back to school. Also, serving is extremely flexible schedule wise, so most people that work at restaurants choose that line of work so they can work around school. Some people have no other choice but to be servers, and treating them like shit by not tipping is not only demoralizing to them, but extremely arrogant and inhumane by you.

Asians can vary a lot, depending on where they're from and how they were raised. Japanese tend to tip high because theyve been taught from a young age to always be thankful and respectful, for instance.

I go to the same restaurant at the same time every week. I tip 25%. The waitresses know me, take care of me and make sure my food comes out hot and fast. It's worth it.
I do the same when I order pizza from my favorite place. The driver told me they scan the orders and grab the ones where they know the tips are good. So when I call and they say it will be an hour, I get my order in 30 minutes.
Finally, my son s a cook at a decent restaurant and wanted my wife and I to go over there and try dinner. Got there, ordered drinks, dinner and desert.
The waitress knew our son was the cook and made sure we were really taken good care of. The bill should have been about $150 but the owner, knowing who we were, comped us for everything but the drinks. I left a $100 tip. Everyone really loved my son after that.

Usually management protects us over the customers since they took the effort to train us, and we can always get more customers. Word of mouth may travel, but people are petty and as soon as they find out that the customer didn't tip even though service was good, then everyone would basically agree with the waiter.

I usually tip 20-30% but the gratuity obviously varies depending on how good the service was. That being said, I think it's complete bullshit that the customers are generally expected to tip a consistent amount to make up for the horrible wages that are given to waiters and waitresses. The standard wage for servers has been $2.13 for over 25 years now while minimum wage for every other occupation has increased about $4.00. This is on part of the NRA (National Restaurant Associaton) putting in millions of dollars towards lobbyist to keep it that way. So now the only people who stand to benefit from this are restaurant owners, certain corporations, and obviously those who take advantage of the flawed system and choose not tip. In my eyes, this system is most likely not going to change anytime soon as it hasn't for decades.
The food service industry contains one of the biggest job markets in the United States. Believe it or not, millions of people are able to make half-decent living but only because certain customers are willing to pay a little bit extra money that lets these millions of people enjoy a decent standard of living. Also, not everyone is born to be doctors and lawyers, people. We need people who work for jobs in the food industry, often regardless of pay. That's somewhat honorable.
