But I learned one thing that made me "leftist": compassion. Life is big and you don't know what will happen. Some people grow up in a shitty environment, others get hit by unemployment, people are victims to discrimination because of their sexual orientation or heritage.. And holy fuck, unemployment could hit me everyday as well. So I do my best to spread the good that's happening to me and which to remain I work for to those who aren't as lucky as I am. I don't even expect to get something back in times of need. Experiencing thankfulness here and now is rewarding enough. And even if some people aren't thankful, I don't mind. Of course, even social systems are exploitable, and of course, there are people who do that. But a civilized society needs to be able to live with that, and those who do so will always be a minority, otherwise you'd have already heard of countries having an entire currency reform because of their welfare system.
And of course, politicians can also be those who exploit the social system. But if they go all too far with it, they're usually sanctioned by not being reelected - at least, that basically still works here in Germany. Although, of course, the system is far from perfect.
But the point is: I pay mandatory fees for public health insurance. I'm hardly ever sick. So I pay for other people's health. And I like doing it - plus: If I needed a heart transplantation all of a sudden, I'd get all the hundreds of thousands of Euros it costs paid for. I know I won't die, even if I lose my job tomorrow and have a heart attack the day after. And so does everyone. That's a great thing.
