Actually, french citizens can join the Legion.
They do this now because once upon a time France sent the Legion to fight one of the bloodiest battles they've ever had with almost no support and definitely no care for the amount of foreigners dying to reclaim their colony for them.
Due to this the Legion sent a sniper to Paris to take out the PM with the intent of taking over the govt. The French pussies found out at the last and beat the plot. Then, they disappeared or retired most of the foreigners in leadership positions in the Legion and installed a French Cadre of officers.
Now they keep the Legion under the watchful eye of their own and moved them to the furthest extent they could to dissuade another attempt
