Manual transmitions are for people who enjoy the sensation of driving, plenty women enjoy driving too so nothing to do with being 'manly'.
Automatics are good cruisers for people who prefer a relaxing, less involved experience and are perhaps too clumsy to drive a normal car. Both have their merits.

Because they are cheaper to manufacture than automatics.
There was a time where automatic transmissions weren't advanced enough to outshift a driver that knew what they were doing; but at this point the tech has advanced to a level where computers can handle shifting as well as people can......although that being said those sort of automatic transmissions are going to be much more expensive than a good 6 speed manual.
Also a manual transmission can be fun, if you know how to use it.
>>687364929

And you're retarded.
Manuals use to be much more refined that automatic shifters. Manual shifting cars are beginning to die out since we have transmissions that shift much faster and are much more efficient than manual shifters. I like manual shifters but since we can buy dual clutch automatic transmission cars for relatively cheap it's becoming to be such an outdated piece of tech (i.e., manual shifters). However, manual shifters are more fun for some people, which I could agree with for certain cars. NIGGERS.

American checking in
In the 19 years I have been driving, I have never owned a car with an automatic transmission
There are a variety of reasons to prefer a manual transmission to an automatic transmission.
There is better fuel efficiency from a manual transmission. In a manual transmission when the clutch is engaged the entire drivetrain is linked together. An automatic transmission uses a torque converter which is a fluid coupling which tends to have between 5-10% slippage. There are locking torque converters but they do not always locked, particularly during stop and go city driving.
Manual transmissions are lighter, cheaper, and less expensive to repair. If the clutch goes on a manual transmission you're only going to spend a few hundred replacing it. If the clutch packs go on an automatic transmission you could be spending thousands.
That all being said automatics can still be capable for performance driving. Automatics have torque multiplication with torque converters which means more power at launch. Automatics are consistent which is good for bracket racing. Automatics have faster shift speeds which is important because in a manual when you're shifting the clutch is disengaged and you're putting zero power down. A misshift can also cost you valuable seconds, in a technical course with a lot of downshifting and upshifting those can add up.
>>687367480
>If you want one that doesn't feel sloppy
Holy fucking shit Chevy Chevy Chevy sloppiest garbage to ever disgrace the roads I'd rather drive a CVT. (Okay maybe a lie there)
driving would just be a completely dull task if there wasn't gear shifting.
I live in the UK, 21, driving for 4 years on an old car with no power steering, drum brakes etc
Driving even a modern Manual seems to require next to no effort as oppose to that. If there wasn't even gear shifting you would literally just sit there and switch off, automatics literally take all of the fun out of driving
Speaking for western europe: Until a few years ago automatics where mainly used by people that are partly handicapped to still be able to drive, but recently i've seen em popping up in adds a lot more frequently so I assume it's slowly coming here as well.
Personally I love driving and couldn't imagine driving an automatic every day, but I understand that most people see driving as a way to get from A to B and prefer doing their make up and driving up a tree than having control over their driving
>>687366749
America.
Older folks (60+) can all do it, but younger than that, it's probably like 5% that have the skill.
Only 6% of new cars sold have manual gearboxes.

>>687364929
because manual is better
Automatic transmissions have improved to the point that they get the same fuel economy, and shift just as good as manual. Manual is more for people who enjoy it or want to feel cool. What used to be advantages are now negligible differences.

>trucks and heavy SUVs do kind of suck with autos, with the exception of dedicated off roaders
Modify the auto if no likee.
Trucks with autos properly set up have extremely low crawl ratios if you want that, are outstanding for towing (and if you bought adequate brakes you don't need compression braking), and you don't risk frying a clutch if you are abusing the truck in wrecker duty or similar. Even big rigs are gradually going to modern automatic tranmissions.
You can make an auto do anything.
I've had 3 cars in my life.
2 automatics i had from ages 16-22
1 manual from 22-now
am 23 now, and I honestly like the manual better
I live in LA, but only commute about 20 miles roundtrip a day to get to work, so I dont deal with traffic. tl;dr manual is for those that enjoy taming the beast of a machine, and doing it well.
My current bitch is a:
Mazdaspeed3 263 HP while stock but mine has
-stage 2 clutch
-1400 cc injectors
-headers
-fuel pump
-catless downpipe

-niggatuned

It was marketed as a luxury item in the 60s when they first started to become prevalent. Basically every American built car was sold with an auto gearbox from that point on, except for stripper models, some sports cars, and stripper model pickups. Even in muscle cars, motorsports, and drag racing, everyone is all about Turbo 400s and their derivatives.
It was also heavily marketed towards women. I'd say that probably 0.1% of women under the age of 50 can drive a stickshift in the US. My mom and my grandmother can both drive stick like a boss.
It seems to be turning around a bit though, mostly with muscle cars and sports cars. If you buy a sports car with an auto gearbox you will never hear the end of it. Most muscle cars sold in the 70s and 80s were autos.

>>687371025
Fantasy world you live in.
Name one car with an electronic e-brake.
>>687369618
Really? A manual is more fun to drive, more responsive and gives you more control. Beyond that, you save $1k on the sticker and in UK where gas (petrol) is $10/gallon, the 5 MPG or so savings is worth a lot. That's an awful lot of money and loss of fun for being lazy.
That being said, CVTs are rivalling manuals in fuel economy so you're seeing more and more autos in Europe now because of it.

Except everyone who isn't a retard knows where the most economical engine speed for their car is. Usually it's somewhere around maximum torque.
Also, a human can SEE the road ahead and plan accordingly.
If I'm in second gear at 30km/h in some packed traffic and I see that 3 rows ahead people are braking, I _know_ there's no fucking point shifting into third gear only to apply the brakes 5 seconds later and then shift back into second once they've accelerated back up to speed.
I'll just leave it in second and cut the throttle, using engine braking and thus saving fuel and brake pads compared to the automatic.
I can guarantee you that if I drove with the intent of getting the highest mileage possible, I could definitely beat an automatic.
>>687369618
>>687364929
I feel like driving is an experience. Some people get it, some don't.
Europen, and the only two people I know who drive automatics are both disabled - one missing an arm, the other having short limbs like a thalidomide victim.
and I think the one missing the arm now uses a semiauto flappy-paddle, rather than a shitbox auto.
>>687373521
Good for you.
Manual transmission offers far more control over the vehicle than an automatic. It is also far more energy efficient and easier to fix than automatic transmission.
>>687371551
>How is drivetrain ECU accessible to outsiders while vehicle is in operation?
Install a wireless receiver somewhere.
>With a rifle I could kill anyone without breaking a sweat, and with a suppressor without making much noise.
A rifle leaves some pretty fucking obvious evidence for everyone to see, as opposed to an "accident".
>>687373303
Do you know what ABS is?
Basically every car sold since 1995 has it.
It works by releasing the brakes for a split second when the wheels lock up, even if you're pressing the pedal with all your might.
There's no reason why it couldn't jam the brakes open and just leave them there, if it was programmed to do so.
>>687372299
Gratzé. This Euro trash faggot gets it.
>checked
Used to drive manuals, after having driven an automatic I will always prefer them. Flappy paddles >
I'm an American and I drove a Manuel transmission 80 miles a day for 8 years. There is no benefit and you want to kill yourself when you are in traffic. Only delusional poor Europeans and racing enthusiasts would want to drive them. Automatic cars are for adults. Manuel is for children.
>>687372672
I work at a car dealership, driving is an activity to be enjoyed. Stupid fucking nigger.
>>687373521
I fully understand this feeling. I drive a man train sports car, one of my coworkers asked me in a group what mileage I would get.
Even with a mid sized turbo I could honestly tell everyone that if I was not trying high 30s and if trying low 40s.
>>687367544
A better example is baking bread.
You can bake your own bread every few days, and have a better tactile sensation, better control over flavor, more involvement and greater feeling of satisfaction.
Or you can go to the store and buy bread when you want it.
It really is just a matter of convenience.
>>687370331
Something about this bitch is stupid.
>>687370624
I'm always worried about riding the transmission/engine when decelerating. Feel like I'm doing huge damage. Should I downshift? Honest question because my foot is drawn to the clutch as soon as the brake

Have you been to northern new jersey? Its pretty twisty there, especially some parts of sussex county.
>>687374714
If you are in high enough gear and high enough revs, you can tap the brake without clutching and not damage anything mechanical. I do it all the time when I'm at highways speeds in 6th gear.
>>687365951
idiot. take into account that a car ("bunch of moving metal") has inherent cultural associations. Are you triggered by the idea of a soccer mom in a minivan as well? Surprised when you see a medical doctor step out of a european sports car? Stop being reductive and contribute to the conversation.

It used to be that you lost a lot of power with automatic transmissions do to friction loss, but I don't know if that is still the case with some modern automatics. Manuals do give you a more usable mechanical advantage.

I'm usually in 6th as well, but I feel like it's gonna cost less to replace the brakes than to replace the clutch. It also feels lazy to use the engine to slow the car. Maybe just autism on my part

>>687365672
Actually, I've experienced that people who drive stick are largely encouraged to pay more attention to the road. The hand that would normally be free while driving an automatic is now occupied by the stick. Also having to pay attention to clutch control means that any other nagging thoughts that would distract you are now taken up with the action of the clutch. From experience I tend to stall my car if I'm too deep in thought and distracted because of it.
>>687372299
I'm so good I don't have to clutch.
>>687364929

>everyone lives in New York City and spends their day in a traffic jam
I do agree that when stuck in a traffic jam, shifting in and out of neutral all the time is a bit of a pain in the ass.
However, being stuck in a traffic jam is something I avoid and definitely not my idea of driving.
Even though I live in a big city, I never get in traffic jams.
Just gotta know your roads.

>>687376364
I had the same thoughts really early one as well, after doing more research online (not 4chan) and actually speaking to an auto engineer at an engineering conference (I'm a mech engineer) I abandoned that thinking and starting braking without the clutch and using engine braking.
>>687376702
If you're serious, it's called floating. If you are a trucker, they say you shouldn't do it, but don't listen to those faggots. If you are talking about doing it in an everyday road car, you really shouldn't, and if it's easy to do in your road car, then there might be something wrong with your transmission.
>>687376702
I don't care how good you are you have to use your clutch to get going. Otherwise you're going to fucking destroy your synchros

Couldn't put it in first but I noticed that trying to put it in second caused me to move slightly. Later I learned that's because of the synchro and naturally my 2nd gear synchro is completely fucked.
>>687377801
I agree.
If I don't engine brake my clutch will last for 200,000 miles, but if I do engine brake it will last for 195,000 miles.
Either way I'm going to replace it at 180,000 miles because of reasons. Jesus Christ people just live your life and not argue about which option may save you $50 dollars when you need to replace both your clutch and brakes anyways
every car in america is automatic first, that's the cheaper option I think. I prefer manual tho and always go for that first when I buy a vehicle.

>>687378035
It didn't used to be that way. In the muscle car heydays, everything was auto, just because. Having 4 on the floor was a gear head status symbol, but boring people thought manual were only for poor people.
