Well, people aren't really sure yet about the purpose of these bright colors. A few say it's for mating and others say it's a warning sign.
Both kinda make sense but I guess for the latter.
And yes they're harmless. Though If you're allergic to their venom and get bitten you should get your ass to the emergency room asap.
Also, the venom varies amongst tarantulas, the hair kicking ones usually don't really have a potent venom, but the ones that don't kick hairs (usually from africa or asia etc.) can really fuck you up for a while.
For example making you feel worn-out and the part that got bitten will have a spreading sensation like it's on fire and if you're really unlucky you won't be able to move that bodypart for a few months.
Never got bitten by one myself even though I handle them quite often. Not even sure if I am allergic.

But also really dependant of the species and sometimes you just get an asshole tarantula.
The most times people get bitten is simply because the tarantula mistakes their hand(s) for food, it's easy to prevent this by just touching the tarantula gently with your tweezer. You'll see how it reacts and even if the tarantula bites the tweezer you can handle her after she realizes it's not food.

Temperament will vary from species to species, as well as individual to individual. They're not something you'd really want to think of in such anthropomorphic terms, like "friendly." The Chilean Rose-haired tarantulas I used to keep were very docile, lazily crawling around on my hand or arm. I'm just generalizing about what I'd read way back when I was into keeping spiders. My perception was that Asian tarantulas tended to be more aggressive, with more toxic venom. Assuming my memory hasn't failed me, I don't know why that's the way it is. I'd assume that it's a function of natural selection, having to adapt to killing hardier prey items than their new-world counterparts faced, perhaps.

That's a good question. My guess goes on something evolutionary, tarantulas from africa and asia have to deal with a lot more predators than let's say tarantulas from south america.
If I remember correctly there is some kind of wasp that literally stings tarantulas just to lay eggs inside of them so the tarantula ends up as a breeding place and gets eaten from inside.
