They are still a great band, and they pretty much invented hardcore. It is a shame that they turned out to be bigoted assholes though. On the other hand, they are the ones who gave Minor Threat a huge break, and helped them get an album made. For that alone they deserve our thanks.
It is worth noting that the early punk/hardcore community in general were pretty homophobic. Darby Crash was in all likelyhood gay, according to his friends. They kind of helped him hide it, and shielded him from the broader punk community of the time, because if it had of gotten out he would probably have been ostracized, and maybe even beaten or murdered over it. I've identified as a punk most of my life now, but the punk community has never been perfect. A lot of shit about it, even early on was pretty nasty and vile. No group of people are above acting retarded and thinking ignorant shit, or treating people who don't deserve it like garbage.

Bad Brains were never perfect people. I recall some interview or something with HR years ago defending the right of a husband to "correct" his wife--code words for domestic violence. Their religious sensibility was more Rasta that regular Christian, FWIW.
They'd been hounded out of DC shortly before I got into the scene, so I never really got to see a proper Bad Brains show. I did, however, end up at a house party where either they or HR's band (can't recall) were playing in the living room of an old Victorian somewhere in NW. Cops showed up after two songs and shut the place down.

'bout 5 or 6 years, he was clean the second time we played with them but the first time he showed up late for their set, slammed a bottle of Jameson in the green room, drank like 6 beers on stage while he was playing then passed out under a table back-stage and had to be carried out to their van.
