Start looking for a job NOW.
If you already have a job you're one step up, but it's time to get two, three, four if you have to. A lot of companies have "no homeless" and "no unemployed" policies when looking at applications.
Find a cheap motel and stay there so you have a place to sleep and a shower.
If you can't afford that right now then you need to at least get a gym membership so you can shower and wash your clothes in the shower.
Panhandling will get you stuff SOMETIMES. Other times people are going to do everything they can to fuck with you, including taking any money you've been given throughout the day regardless of how much you need it.
Remember; you are now considered subhuman. Very few people see the homeless as what they are, people down on their luck. Most people see you as a thing that doesn't feel like contributing.
If you're in or near a city you've got a leg up. If you're out in the country you're in for really hard times.

Carry a knife, as stated above learn to fight. Do everything you can to get a job now. Look for farmers adds, they can help a guy out more than you'd think. I would go up north to the woods, but I live in canada and its literal wilderness, but its summer right now.
If you are going this route make sure to make camp near a water source and have a really good fucking tent and a sleeping bag.
Learn how to make traps and get a small rod for fishing, in general try to pack up as much knowledge about wilderness and survival into that faggot head of yours.
If you are not the type to escape somewhere wild and want to take your chances in the city, then I cant offer any advice unfortunately.
I used to be homeless. I used fake addresses and phone numbers and still was able to get a job at a temp agency. I was only homeless on the streets with no roof for a month until I could afford a car.
My tip: you NEED to find a job as soon as you can. Preferably a place that don't ask a lot of questions but Thats just me.. I once made 50 bucks on a rainy day holding a little ceasars sign next to the road. Same for liberty tax.
It's hard but don't be a pessimistic bitch because that drags you down even farther. Also I've learned to NEVER associate with other homeless. I learned that the hard way because they only want to fuck you over and you get dragged down farther with them.
Live in solidarity and concealment and always be weary of everything. Try not to thrive solely off of people pitying you. Only you are going to help yourself, so you need to start pulling you own weight up.

#1 piece of advice: get your benefits/government security money in order before you losr your home, and apply to hostels as soon as you can. if you do this right, depending on where you are, you can totally avoid the streets and end up with your own room in a safe (and surprisingly decent) environment, while you get back on your feet.
do it wrong and you'll be on the street and nobody will give a fuck. like i said, i work in this sector and if you do it wrong even WE can't give a fuck -- because we need your government cheques to help you at all. good luck.

Go to your local social services office and apply for food stamps. They will immediately give you a card with hundreds of dollars on it.
Apply for a low income cell phone. You will get an older model for free and free minutes.
Again ask, human services about housing. Sometimes homeless can get on a list for a crappy apartment.
Try not to look homeless as much as possible and apply for any, and I mean ANY job. Seriously you don't want to homeless. It's not fun or romantic or liberating at all. It's grueling and the mental scars will stay with you for years like PTSD.

i would start by getting to the nearest city; it's where you're most likely to go unnoticed, which is what you need. Begging is a waste of your time because your presence as a homeless person will irritate others, including police. Don't look like you're homeless either. Get a source of income, even if it's some shitty dish washing job to pay for a storage unit. That's your safety spot; it's where you stash everything-- your clothes, canned/dehydrated food, hot plate (for preparing food), drugs(even if not selling or using, it's good to have other investments if you get desperate), and a gun. Do what you can to keep yourself and your clothes clean. Again, it's very important that you don't look homeless because if you do, you'll be vulnerable to anyone who wants to fuck with you in any way. Don't try and make friends either; once you're on the street, you're on your own. Everyone is looking out for themselves and you've got to do the same. Be sure you get in plenty of exercise when you can; it's crucial that you be fit enough to run or fight. Since you fancy yourself a 'survivalist', try and find some good campground and set up a tarp-set for yourself. Since you have a tarp, it's quite easy to build yourself a little lean-to that you can build a fire next to.

without a car your best bet is to find an abandoned location to hold up in. stay away from drainage tunnels if your location gets substantial rainfall. look into churches, they give out free food, clothes, and sometimes vouchers where you can stay at a hotel for the night. if there is a homeless shelter you can hit them up if you need to. if you do get some nice clothes and a place to shower clean yourself up and apply at every place possible. for your address use a friend's place or save up and get a po box. if you have the money you can get a gym membership and shower regularly. 24 hour gyms are the best because you can charge any electronics you have and maybe even doze off there for a few hours in the middle of the night as long as you look like you are working out and not crashing there. you can probably sleep in restrooms if you're really hard up. if you have a few dollars buy some multivitamins so you can get some nutrition and your teeth don't fall out. try to keep your hygiene decent if you can. i lived in my car for about half a year in 2015, but i was working at the time. it makes it a lot easier if you are mobile, maybe try to get a bike or some type of transportation that is faster than walking. good luck m8

Go up to to Pittsburg or Colebrook and litterally just find a long dirt road if Route 3 and go into the woods and set up shop and I guarantee no-one will fuck with you. There are actually a lot of squater mountain men that do that up there. Just bring a lot of blankets and any cooking supplies and any reading material. You can hide your car in the spruce brush and everything. I did it for a few months a few years back when I was unemployed. I shot grouse and Turkey . Caught wild trout and pickeral. Brought some strawberrie and tomato plants. Picked blueberry and made birch tea. You'll really figure yourself out up there. But keep an eye out for fish and game and homeland security helicopters. Make sure the land isn't posted, NH state law requires all private land to be posted , so if it's not then you have every right to "camp " there.

something I forgot to mention: if you are camping and you make a fire make a dakota fire pit. this is where you dig a hole into the ground and then make two little tunnels off to the side that go to the main hole. this will help you keep your fire from blowing/spreading as well as keep it smoke free which will make it a lot less detectable for someone to find. if you need to know how to make one specifically just google it, it's the best campfire you can make as it is also below ground level which is great for cooking above it. you can also bury it and sleep on the ground above it at night if it is cold.
