Bran is being guided by the old man into the past to view things as they have been.
While there, they fall under siege to the white walker army and bran can hear what is happening. In an attempt to flee from his excursion into the past bran accidentally connects the minds of the only person that exists in both his current reality, and the past he is viewing. This is why hodor seems to gain a sudden burst of clarity and enlightenment which allows him to spring into action. The consciousness of his younger, non-potatoe self is flooded with the memories and experiences as that consciousness inhabits hodors current self.
As the older hodor is brutally slaughtered the younger self is forced to bear the death as his consciousness is still linked.

Bran is time traveling and Meera Reed (who is dragging his body away from the white walkers) is screaming "Hold the door" and in the time traveling, because Bran is in both places you can hear her voice and because Bran is controlling Hodor in current time (you saw it early at the tree where Meera got in contact with Bran) he also started controlling the younger Wyllis who then starts to repeat Meera's "hold the door" words.
Wyllis is then traumatized and he can only now say "Hold the door" a.k.a "Hodor"
Hope that made some sort of sense.
