this has passed my mind several times, and I do agree... but the massive expensve this would give them from the fuel use, and casualties/accidents that would happen would probably be worse.
I also had this thought while serving my country, but I just took it as a lesson on self control and mindset, and honor/respect for the leaders.

The Germans were always low on fuel. They developed synthetic fuels but their main aim was the oilfields in Romania.
The German column heading for Antwerp in 1945 ran out of fuel 50km from the city. They had no air cover on D-Day for lack of fuel and pilots.
Besides, marching feet didn't destroy the roads like convoys did.

Interestingly, refugees from Syria and Iraq are being shown photos and movies of post-war Germany. They are much encouraged by what they see in Germany today. They are being told they could do the same thing for their countries. Of course, the Marshall Plan bankrolled the Germans; no sign of anything for the Near East from, say, Saudi.
