Sup /b/, I'm going to be starting college in a few months, what advice have you got for me? How do I get by without becoming Chad The Cunt or Neville The No-life? Also college stories, good or bad.
>>
You're going to start at end of the year?
That's weird
>>

Oh I know
>kill yourself
>>

September?
>>
>>684446025
5 or 6

Anyway I don't consider 6 months "a few"

Fucking kill yourself
>>
>>684445323
take a lot of notes so finals will make you a little less suicidal
>>
>>684445323
You have to ask yourself what you're going to college for.
Do you want to be a successful professional?
Or go on a 4 year vacation that you will spend the rest of your life struggling to pay for?

If you're not doing STEM, you are wasting your time and money.

Successful med student here, I only made a few friends in college, but all the rest of the rabble are still eating shit as uni students...
>>
>>684445323
>go to class
>go out with people on your floor (assuming freshman and dorm loving)
>if you are doing anything you shouldn't be in your dorm (drinking or smoking) and your RA comes knocking. Do NOT open your door, pretend you are not there. They can not open your door.
>Some RAs are cool but most are not and don't trust them, they'll turn on you as fast as you see you doing something you shouldn't be
>>
>>684445323
Lemme give you a little piece of advice most people don't figure out until they've been out of college for several years.

Never forget that the majority of your professors have never been out of school since the time they were 6. They graduated high school, went to college, went to grad school, started teaching while in grad school, got their masters/PhD, and went straight into academia. So when they start telling you all about reality and the real world, remember they have no clue wtf they're talking about. That being said, put whatever bullshit they spout as the answer on your test, or you're going to fail miserably. Grades are about the game as much as about knowledge.
>>
STEM isn't the only option, business majors will be okay too. If you plan on a liberal arts degree then just kill yourself. Talk to people in your classes on the first day, they might not be back until the first test. Don't drink the night before a test. Don't try to become a lawyer.

If you're at a good school it really doesn't matter what your major is. Women's study major here at an IVY, had business internships out the wazoo and no trouble finding a job after. Way more opportunity than if I had majored in business or econ at a state school
>>
>>684447723
Majors do matter. Even with your fancy IVY degree you couldn't get my job (biochemist) with your degree

I meant for employment. I don't know anyone from my class 2014 in any area who isn't doing something related to what they're doing. I have no interest in being a biochemist. I actually have a physics minor and at one point was considering heading to grad school. But the prospects for a successful tenure track career in academia for an entering grad student are rather dismal.
>>
>>684448983
Kek, grad school for women's studies? I can see that being a dead end
>>

Have you considered a vasectomy?
You really should look into it.

Internship to consulting position at Deloitte. Nothing really kek about that path.

universities are for fags
>>
>>684445323
My college life lesson: A 2.0 isn't any different from a 4.0 unless you're planning on going to go to graduate school. What matters is the piece of paper called a "degree". If you don't complete your degree, you're no different from a high school graduate.
>>
>>684449207

No for physics. 10% of science PhDs end up in faculty positions.
>>
>>684445323
do not fuck with anyone in your first year

observe people first
>>
>>684449632
Thinks he could get into grad school for physics with a minor in it? Top Kek, pro tip you never had a chance
>>
I just graduated and I regret going. Make sure you are going because you want to have a specific job in a certain field. Otherwise dont go.
>>
>>684449786
First off I switched majors my junior year after doing an REU at Baylor. Prior to that I was A WS minor physics major. The interactions with faculty and graduate students during this process made me realize how bleak their future prospects were. I then switched my WS minor to major and got an internship at Deloitte and I now consult for them.

But what is your job there? office drone? hired to make everyone life worse white buzzwords. and to take office when skilled people get promoted.
>>
>>684450453
That because you choose a worthless major out side academia. Where did you plan to do work at CERN, Fermi or NASA? And switching during your junior year makes me think you couldn't handle it because it's your junior year when you are done with gen eds and are doing just about major only classes. I'm was a chem major and shit got real my junior year but I got through it.
>>
>>684450717
I started as an Analyst and now my official title is Consultant.
>>
>>684445323
what are you planing to study? STEM or do you plan to wast your time and money.
>>
>>684451159
But what dos that mean? what to you Analyse? what do you Consultant?
>>
>>684451145
I didn't switch because I chose a "worthless" major. If you're so committed to Bio/Chem/Physics PhD programs in the US and look term prospects of a graduate student progressing to a faculty position in any of those fields is bleak. Have fun being a postdoc or on soft money for a decade. My quantitative skills are excellent. I also took two years of chemistry to leave the possibility of Med school open. I don't know of any other of my fellow graduates in WS who have had any difficulty doing what they want to do.
>>
>>684449543
How much do you make in a year?

How long is it going to take to pay off your shit tier degree?
>>
>>684445323
Real advice from someone who made all these fuckups:
>study over and over
>get AT LEAST an 80% on everything
>no drugs/alcohol (save that shit til later) - you have the rest of your life to fuck around, but college is incredibly expensive and it's not worth wasting all that money to be stoned/drunk all the time and end up a burn out
>if you can't manage women with your studies then drop women until you graduate
>don't take on a friend for a roommate
>>
>>684451798
Started at 65,000 now I'm at 87,000. I graduated with 14,000 in loans. Ivy's have large endowments so they offered very generous financial aid in the form of grants. Student loans are absolutely not an issue with my "shit" tier degree.
>>
>>684445323
Find a professor in your major that you like and make them your friend; go out and have some brews after class n shit. You can use them later to help sign off on some of the harder requirements of your degree.
>>
The STEM circlejerk is always good for a laugh. Plenty of respectable jobs for liberal arts majors. Learn to write, research and communicate well and, provided you have drive, you can land a wide variety of positions that require "any" 4-year degree.

>implying I want to become a prof
>2 years of chem
So what general and organic, wow I'm so impressed
I also don't know anyone who graduated with a chemistry degree that have trouble become a chemist.
What's wrong with being a postdoc? I'd rather have their work schedules andenvironment than what you get working at an office. I choose my own schedule and work on my own time when I want. I can show up at 6am or noon, it only matters I get my work done. Also I get to publish and further scientific knowledge, instead on helping earn some CEO a bigger stack of cash

If you can, stay at home while attending a community college to save $$$.

Join clubs you may be remotely interested in; that's the key to getting decent girls without spending tons of cash on shitty drinks.

Hit the gym and stop eating crap.
>>
>>684452350
With that pay I rather stay blue collar.

>>684445323
Pick a major with a career future (No philosophy/art/gender studies/etc). Pick a minor with a career future.
Leave hobby degrees like philosophy to the future fast food workers of America.
"You have to find a job you love so major in what you love!" was said by someone who is crushed by student debt and has to make money sucking dicks down by the docks because their degree's only career path was teaching the degree to others.
>>
You probably didn't study in high school. You need to start studying. Also don't try to get a 4.0, you'll get burned out. C's get degrees and 99% of employers won't care about your gpa
>>
Graduated yesterday w a degree in bio. Don't waste your time. Shit goes by fast. Don't get involved in a bunch of random resume building bullshit clubs and volunteer work. Employers see right through that. Find a few activities you enjoy and dedicate yourself to them. Do what interests you, but don't lose sight of the importance of getting a degree which will get you a good job. Stay away from the humanities, psych, sociology.

Also weed>>>>>>alcohol for brain functionality.

Also just ask her, she's probably dtf.
>>
>>684453370
Only do community college if you are not sure what you want to do. Otherwise go to uni, you'll have way more fun
