Americans really don't understand Bernie at all, do you. Half of you think you'll get free shit, and the other half thinks You'll lose a bunch of money and get nothing in return.
It's neither of those options. You'd pay higher taxes, but with increased security and comfort for most people. Raising the well-being of most citizens. So it's not free, but you're way better off with paying those taxes than if you didn't. However in USA it demands a fairly large cultural change from focus on selfishness to focus on the common good.
I live in a country that already is the way Bernie proposes, and I can vouch for it being very comfortable. You got to fuck up pretty bad to fall off the wagon, but as long as you stay on, which is easy, you'll keep paying taxes for the support that's keeping you up.
